we moved from Pasadena to Charlotte 4 years ago.
I would really like to move back to CA, but DH loves it here. Sigh.

It is the ridiculously expensive part that trips up my DH. We both could get jobs quite easily in our fields, in fact, DH would be better off in CA with his line of work.
Personally, as long as I can be back in CA I don't mind the expensive part and the smaller house, etc...

My family came to America in 1844 from Odessa, Russia to escape persecution. My great-great grandfather settled in Napa, California BEFORE GOLD WAS DISCOVERED.
Yes sir, I am a rarity I suppose. I'm an older guy getting ready to retire who is a fifth generation Californian.
I remember when the El Camino between Sunnyvale and Santa Clara was two lane with prune orchards on either side.
I remember being able to walk from Redwood City to San Jose and never leave an orchard.
Does anyone else remember Me and Eds Pizza in Redwood City off the El Camino?
I remember when the bay area had three television channels. 4, 7, 9 and 11. I know, that's four but channel 9 didn't count because it was a hideous educational channel. Not against education you understand just that the channel was terrible.
I remember when KLIV first aired.
We purchased our four bedroom, two bedroom home at 2338 Dundee Drive in 1961 for $29,999. It was known as the Bonnie Brae sub division.
The only highway connecting San Francisco to the South Bay was 101 or The Bayshore Freeway. All the rest didn't exist.
And now for the real kicker. For a while (55 years ago) we lived at 1010 Runnymede in East Palo Alto. When I was there it was a nice place to be a kid. Now that dates me.

I grew up in La Mirada, my husband grew up in Torrance. We moved to Missouri several years ago and have wanted to come back home ever since. We finally put our house on the market last month. My husbands parents are getting older and he doesn't want to be away from his family any longer, which I understand very well. We can't wait to get back home, just not sure where we will live. I want to rent in a city or two first before we buy a house to make sure it's the right area for us.

By the time I was growing up most of those were gone, although the Olson property in Sunnyvale was still there.

When I was a kid, the orchards started in earnest just south of the I-280 right of way, in Cupertino. There was some development at the Cupertino cross roads. Then , other than a half a dozen smaller strip malls along "Old HWY 9," more orchards until you got to the area near downtown Saratoga.

I do seem to vaguely recall that.

Then the second wave, which must have started during the 60s, such as 2, 5, 20, 44 and 36. Remember Bob Wilkins on 2? And that commercial with Carol Doda for "the perfect 36?"

By my time, KLIV was the main competition for KFRC. I also seem to vaguely recall one other top 40 stations as well, but for the life of me cannot recall the call letters.

My folks got their house for a bit more than that, but not much more than that. It was new, built in the late 1960s.

By my time, Hwy 17 (as it was called all the way to San Rafael, at the time), was just recently upgraded to proper freeway from Los Gatos to El Cerrito. Of course that included the Cyprus structure. We'd take it to go to the odd A's game, although we were Giants fans, but our main reason to take it was to get to the Berkeley Marina for the Stripped Bass boats. There were wheat fields along it between Hayward and Decoto Road, I can remember seeing the combines. I remember when I-280 was opened up and it seemed like something from the Jetsons. 85 was new, and only went from Stevens Creek to 101. 480 was how we went to North Beach - we never thought about what might happen to it in an earthquake. South of SJ 101 was not a freeway and encompassed "Blood Alley."

Things have somewhat come full circle. I work in this hood. The area is now mostly Hispanic and Pacific Islander working families, most of the gangsters are gone.

Where in PA?
For myself:
* Born in Aberdeen, MD
* Moved to around Harrisburg, PA before I turned 1
* Went to college in Harrisonburg, VA when I was 18
* Moved to Lancaster, PA for my Master's at age 24
* Moved to NW Rhode Island for my Doctorate at age 29
* Moved to San Diego/Pacific Beach when I was 34
* Bought first house in Spring Valley when I was 37
I'm 38 now. Who knows for the future - - although my wish would be either to stay in SD County or move back to PA and live in Pittsburgh.

Born in Allegheny General Hospital in the North Side of Pittsburgh. First two years were spent in Greentree (Pittsburgh), then we moved to Reynolds, a small town near Sharon, PA, from there we moved to Cranberry Twp., where my mom still lives.
After I married a guy from Beaver, PA (1983), we moved to Monaca. And then we moved to Oakland Ca in 1984 and bought a house here in 1987.
We're hitting 50 this year and are in business for ourselves, cleaning up. No really. It's a janitorial business.
HO! A janitorial business joke! Sorry about that.
My historical family on my mom's side is from Meyersdale PA (Jacob Seiler, immigrated 1749) and Hooversville PA (Michael Kocher, immigrated 1738) -- both are in Somerset County, but at the time they got their land (both were farmers) it was still Bedford County. And on my dad's side of the family, his dad was from East Prussia (Germany) but his mom's side goes back to 1803, Phillip Mason from England who immigrated to Cumberland County, PA, but his son moved to Londonderry Twp, Bedford County -- which became Hyndman in 1877.
