Hello all -

I am from the East Coast, born and raised. I recently have the opportunity to transfer my current job with my present employer to California. Here's the dilemma. My company has locations in downtown LA and in Newport Beach.

My question is - where is the most optimal place to live and commute to work from. Somewhere near downtown LA or someone near Newport Beach? Which neighborhoods or places in particular?

I will be moving out to Cali with my wife.
We have no kids at the moment but we would like to have some soon so good school districts are important.
We are looking for places with a good "walk-ability".
Would like nearby cafes, restaurants, parks and supermarkets.
We definitely want a younger atmosphere, as we are still under 30.
Dog friendly areas - we have 2 dogs.
Obviously we do not want to be in a sketchy area and I do not want to commute very far to and from work.

The kicker is - we would like to stay around $500-600K - when considering the amount we would like to spend on a house. We really like the craftman style homes, however I am not sure if they are in our price range. I would not be opposed to renting first, getting a feel for a place, then owning.

Where should i live?!

My California people - please help me out!!

LA County though Orange is not bad. But for more in every aspect, LA County for sure.

First, call it California.

Maybe live in LA until you have kids, and then move to OC (and obviously switch offices).

Thanks - my apologies, "California" - however some neighborhood suggestions would be appreciated.

Pasadena. Has a lot of Craftsman houses, as well as the rest of your desires.

Oh, and "SoCal" as a term is also OK to use.

Isn't OC County like saying Orange County County? :S

LA is so overrated, SF is the best city in the state, come here if you can afford it, because of the real estate speculation SF one on the most expensive cities in the US.

Also good, but less walkable than Pasadena or Burbank.
