To be fair, he did do an ode to Los Angeles on his final album, although one that probably would not be considered to be a signature song by too many Just in time for the '84 Olympics....

I don't know what the "official" California song is, but this is mine.

Chris Rea - "On the Beach"

Chris Rea - "On the Beach" (Megamix)

Alternate:

Steely Dan - "Deacon Blues"

These songs don't mention CA, but they sure feel like the California I experience and my view of it.

I think Santa Cruz is fine. Still fairly popular as far as I can tell. It's just that the idea of commercializing a Ramones song is unappealing to me.

Steely Dan has a lot of California-themed songs. I used to say that most of what I know about California, I learned from Steely Dan.

One of my favorites:

"Kid Charlemagne"

While the music played you worked by candlelight
Those San Francisco nights
You were the best in town
Just by chance you crossed the diamond with the pearl
You turned it on the world
That's when you turned the world around
Did you feel like Jesus
Did you realize
That you were a champion in their eyes
On the hill the stuff was laced with kerosene
But yours was kitchen clean
Everyone stopped to stare at your technicolor motor home
Every A-Frame had your number on the wall
You must have had it all
You'd go to L.A. on a dare
And you'd go it alone
Could you live forever
Could you see the day
Could you feel your whole world fall apart and fade away

[Chorus:]
Get along, get along Kid Charlemagne
Get along Kid Charlemagne

Now your patrons have all left you in the red
Your low rent friends are dead
This life can be very strange
All those dayglow freaks who used to paint the face
They've joined the human race
Some things will never change
Son you were mistaken
You are obsolete
Look at all the white men on the street

[Chorus]

Clean this mess up else we'll all end up in jail
Those test tubes and the scale
Just get them all out of here
Is there gas in the car
Yes, there's gas in the car
I think the people down the hall
Know who you are

Careful what you carry
'Cause the man is wise
You are still an outlaw in their eyes

[Chorus]

One of our forgotten CA original guys:

https://video.search.yahoo.com/video...&hsimp=yhs-001

Or, one of our own bands from San Jose:
https://video.search.yahoo.com/video...&hsimp=yhs-001

And an old familiar bunch, with the San Francisco mention:

But if we are talking about a CA band playing a song celebrating CA, we just might have to go with:

To me it is California Dreamin', because every time it comes up, I get a certain image of it in my head. I still can't believe I have been living here for 6 years now, given where I came from.

Though written in the 1930s, Woody Guthrie's song "Do Re Me" describes the reality for a lot of folks in the Golden State today.

Lots of folks back East, they say, is leavin' home every day,
Beatin' the hot old dusty way to the California line.
'Cross the desert sands they roll, gettin' out of that old dust bowl,
They think they're goin' to a sugar bowl, but here's what they find
Now, the police at the port of entry say,
"You're number fourteen thousand for today."

Oh, if you ain't got the do re mi, folks, you ain't got the do re mi,
Why, you better go back to beautiful Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, Georgia, Tennessee.
California is a garden of Eden, a paradise to live in or see;
But believe it or not, you won't find it so hot
If you ain't got the do re mi.

You want to buy you a home or a farm, that can't deal nobody harm,
Or take your vacation by the mountains or sea.
Don't swap your old cow for a car, you better stay right where you are,
Better take this little tip from me.
'Cause I look through the want ads every day
But the headlines on the papers always say:

If you ain't got the do re mi, boys, you ain't got the do re mi,
Why, you better go back to beautiful Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, Georgia, Tennessee.
California is a garden of Eden, a paradise to live in or see;
But believe it or not, you won't find it so hot
If you ain't got the do re mi.
