This is good, but I wish California would phase in a hefty fuel tax over the next 10 years or so. The state needs to create incentives for increased public transit, smaller cars, electric cars, etc.

A hefty tax won't deter the people who can afford Hummers. They wouldn't allow me a way to buy a new electric car (on a very low fixed income here), and they won't keep me from holding onto the freedom my old beater Toyota gives me.

They would prevent me from driving as much as I'd like. They wouldn't keep wealthier people from driving as much as they like, though.

How about incentives for fuel companies to come up with a cheap, clean fuel even poor people can use? Especially one that would work in existing cars that currently run on gasoline?

We're not really talking of a scenario where fuel companies give the slightest **** about poor people, are we?

So, that house you bought for $100,000 when you were 30, that's now worth $800,000 - is paving the roads.

Nice roads are paved with taxes. Don't kid yourself.
Yes they are except in California and probably a few other states. You think with some of the highest taxes in the nation we would have some of the best roads right? Well that's clearly not the case and quite the opposite. Again, many other states with lower taxes have better roads. So what is their secret that Ca can't quite seem to figure out?

Hummers haven't been made since May of 2010. Nobody drives those things anymore except poor people who bought them used or those who can't get rid of them. I haven't seen one in ages in SoCal.

California calls many taxes-"fees". Look at your utility bills, phone bill, and cable bill.

Tax increases go to pay public employees unions members fantastic wages, pensions, and health insurance. You are paying for their, beautiful new houses in nice neighborhoods, and nice new cars.

No. We're talking about the type of fuel tax incentive that would work and make a difference in air pollution from vehicles. Or so I thought.

Well, that would explain you missing my point entirely.

so I'm looking at an article about how cheap gas is now and it has a picture of a gas station showing $1.99 a gallon. I don't know if this is a recent picture, but here in Pleasanton Gas is still almost $3 a gallon at the self serves.

Fantastic wages? Horse pucky! What alternative universe do you live in?

High speed rail and other pet projects of the legislators use up loads of the tax dollars. Your incendiary rhetoric is ludicrous and smacks of envy for those who actually have jobs.
