Plumas County Information
Can anyone tell me about the different areas of Plumas County? My family and I are thinking of relocating there in the next few years. How are the schools, the hospital, the shopping? Does the snow interfere with driving, etc? I've already contacted the chamber of commerce, but I'd like to hear a first hand account. Thanks!

What part of Plumas county are you thinking of moving to? Will you be working nearby or trying to commute? Yes, the snow does make driving difficult. But once the snow is cleared, its usually fairly easy to get around. There are some black ice issues, but if you drive carefully and have studded tires, its not too bad. Also, many of the side streets an rural roads don't get plowed unless a neighbor with a snow plow attached to a truck does it.
Greenville's hospital has closed. Chester and Quincy both have a small hospital. Quincy has Feather River Jr. College. Alot of people are sent to Enloe Hospital in Chico or the hospital in Orville since the Plumas hospitals are so small and can't handle major issues.
Shopping is pretty limited. Quincy has a great little downtown with some boutiques, toy store/kids clothing, coffee shops, gift stores, hardware, etc. Quincy has a Safeway, Hardware store, Dollar Store, Taco Bell, Pizza places, etc. East Quincy has a grocery store and some other shops too. Chester is getting more shopping spaces, but I am not sure what is going in. Its just rumors right now, lol. Chester has a clothing store, Holiday Market, hardware, newer bowling alley, Variety Store (with a great fabric selection), some great little restaurants, etc. Lake Almanor is next to Chester and during the spring, summer, and early Fall there are shops and restaurants open.

People get sent to the Oroville hospital? Never heard that before. Do they have a Care Flight system?
The clinic has re-opened in Greenville, thankfully. The Indian Valley Healthcare Committee met last night. There's hope!
Portola has a hospital too, and many women deliver in Reno or Truckee.
As for shopping, can you be more specific? Most things can be purchased locally, which is clearly better for everyone. Still, most kids do their school shopping in Chico or Reno.
It's an absolutely beautiful place. Plumas County has some of the most spectacular country in the state. Lake Almanor, Indian Valley, Crystal Lake, Gennesee, Taylorsville, Buck's Lake, American Valley, Graeagle, Johnsville, Sierra Valley, Lake Davis, .....I could go on and on. It's not for everyone, though. Some thrive and others go stir crazy.
Good luck!

I am glad to hear the clinic is open again. I was sad to see everything shut down last year.
Enloe has the care flight program. People sent to Oroville either go on their own or by ambulance, depending on what's wrong.

I'm planning on visiting Plumas County this summer, and I've heard Quincy is really nice. So I'll probably be looking to relocate to or around Quincy, as I'm hoping to get a job as a teacher. As for shopping, I just meant grocery shopping. Thanks for the info!

Your best bet is to go to PCN On-line News - Plumas County California - and look at the real estate listings. or to realtor.com and search there.
The best agent around was Len Franz at Feather River Properties in Greenville. Sadly, we recently lost him to cancer. He sold his agency, though. I believe Tom Rogers is the new owner/broker. In eastern Plumas County, Jane Valentine and Leah West are both very good. Oh wait a minute, you said Quincy, didn't you? I'm sorry! I don't know anyone there now well enough to recommend.
Good luck! It's beautiful country.

Are there many teaching positions available? I hope to teach French at a high school in Plumas County, but if it doesn't work out I may have to look elsewhere...
