since in most homicides the perpetrator knows the victim stats like that don't really mean very much unless the city/county concurrently has a high incidence of offenses like burglary and robbery.

Surprised to see Monterey higher than San Joaquin. Either San Joaquin county is doing better or Monterey county is doing worse.

Fresno is very similar to Salinas actually, only a lot hotter, larger and worse air quality. The difference is that there's a large swath of Fresno (in and around Woodward Park) which is really nice and safe. However, lets not kid ourselves into thinking that Fresno is some sort of paradise.

Having grown up in Salinas and spent a lot of time in Fresno (father in law used to live there), personally I wouldn't live in either. I think its a matter of picking your poison, when splitting hairs between the two.

Proportionally, the vast majority of the population of Monterey County lives in a poor area. With about 400k residents, you have over 200k living in the Salinas Valley and maybe another 50k between Marina and Seaside. If you look at the nice, upscale areas (Monterey, PG, Carmel, Pebble Beach, Carmel Valley), you're looking at maybe 60k residents total. That's a very small slice of the Monterey County population, but it does tend to be rather insulated from the poorer areas of the county.
