So I'm doing somewhat of a dumb thing: I'm flying in to LAX from Columbus Ohio on Sunday, visiting a selection of private sellers, purchasing a car and driving it all the way back (hopefully). Upon purchasing the car, what happens to the license plates? Do I just keep the original owner's old ones on there? Do I drive the thing with no tags and just hope for the best? I can't get to the DMV until Monday morning, what do I do? (The CA DMV site is particularly uninformative on this subject...)

Just make sure you get the title (pink slip) and a bill of sale from the seller. As long as it is currently registered, put it on your insurance and drive it back to Ohio. You will need to find out in Ohio what their rules are for registering a car from out of state. Just out of curiosity, why are you flying to California to buy a car?

But do sellers typically leave their old plates on the car then? Surely I can't drive across the country without any plates on it?

As for reasons why: I want to go on an adventure for spring break, and I also want a car. This is kinda killing two birds with one stone.

Yes, in California the plates stay on the car when it is sold. Just make sure you get the car checked out and that you don't get scammed. If you are using Craigslist there are about as many scams as their are legit ads.

and make sure it has plates on it and that the rear plate has 2 stickers on it, one is for the year the registration expires, the other is the month - it should match up with the date on the vehicle registration card.

Make sure it's in the sellers name. Lots of people flip/float titles
