My wife walked to her elementary school thru the train yard in Jamestown. The state calls it Rail Town, a lot of movies have been filmed there. We hear the train whistle when we call her dad. Nice small town of about 1200. They just got their first traffic light on 108.

We love it all year. but it can be pretty hot in August and September. Around 105 but dry. Not as bad as the heat in LA 105 and humid.

I think the best time to visit is from April to November, The springtime wildflowers are special! If you're in to skiing, the winter months serve it up well.

I've lived here a long time and I've never been to the frog jump. I had a job when I was 19 where we had to clean up the fairgrounds before frog jump. I never wanted to see the place again! I think the population of the county doubles that weekend

Come on up anytime, give me a PM when you do and I'll give you the chamber of commerce tour

There are some good pictures of the Mountain Ranch town on this website, there ought to be more for Calaveras County as well

The daffodils are about 3 inches out of the ground today, the poppies are just starting to come out of the ground. The best time is a 6 week period that really depends on the amount of rainfall and temperature. I guess I'd figure the first week of April through the middle of May is going to be the best time to look at wildflowers. I'd bias toward May 1 if I was going to make that my goal.

the wife and i have decided on visiting the first week of may. the wildflowers seem to be a big draw for her as the majority of the week will be spent driving around getting a feel for the area. im sure we will trek into the surrounding counties as well. we will want to stay at some B&B's and we would love to look at some property. we also love old saloons! so if anyone has any "must see" spots for us to visit please let me know. we're looking forward to a great time! are there any places for gold panning? is there an official wine tasting tour or are you just on your own??? thanks!!!
