The only one that I know you can is San Francisco. Don't say you can live without driving anywhere. Someone actually said you can live without driving anywhere because the government doesn't force people to drive. That is an extremely stupid comment. I mean where is it POSSIBLE to live without driving. Which means you can still live life, get around everywhere, on foot, public transportation, walking, etc. I'd consider up to 2 miles walking distance, I enjoy walking.

Then perhaps Oakland would work too.

I lived in San Luis Obispo for 5 years without a car and had no problem getting everywhere.

Some communities are also very bike-friendly, like Davis.

The Los Angeles area. LA County as a whole has a MASSIVE bus system.

You gotta love taking the bus, though. The rail system by itself is not going to be sufficient in many instance.

I did it for two years by riding bicycle only.

I lived in the Mission Hills section of the city and I used to walk to downtown. The city is well served by public transit (bus and trolley). San Diego has the best weather in the USA and is very liveable. Balboa Park and the beaches are first rate. If you relocate to an S.D. suburb, you will need a car.

I think that in certain areas of L.A. and/or San Diego one might be able to manage without a car but other areas of those cities one really needs a car.

With LA, it really depends on your lifestyle. LA's transportation infrastructure isn't perfect, but it's mostly all there. If you are a single guy who doesn't work far and don't mind walking/biking a few miles a day for shopping and entertainment... you can probably live in the LA basin, SFV, or SGV without a car.

But if your work is on the other side of the county or if you have a small family, then a car is a must.
