Assemblymember vows to give her raise to charity because seniors' cuts are not being restored, at least this year.

Calif. Legislator Chastises Colleagues on Cuts to State’s Most Vulnerable - New America Media

"In the following commentary Assemblymember Cheryl R. Brown, D-San Bernardino, who chairs the Aging and Long-term Care Committee and sponsored AB 474, reflects on her colleagues’ actions.

The Assembly Budget Subcommittee No. 6 on Budget Process, Oversight and Program Evaluation placed the bill on its suspense file. This procedure of a bill being placed on an Assembly Budget Subcommittee’s suspense file was unusual to me because normally fiscal bills go to the Appropriations’ suspense file.

State Cut $1.4 Billion From Program

By placing AB 474 on a suspense file, relief for seniors and disabled adults being forced to live below the federal poverty level will not happen this year. I have a problem with that; especially, when the state has continuously taken $1.4 billion from the seniors beginning in 2008. For me, this is unacceptable, and I will not be silent and allow this injustice to continue. "

Seniors don't have a union, teachers do and Brown is the teachers union lap dog. An example is how he appealed a ruling that overturned the protections put in place of bad teachers in minority districts. He would rather students receive a poor education than stand up to the teachers union.

Gov. Jerry Brown Appeals California Teacher Tenure Ruling « CBS San Francisco
Which Brown are you talking about?

Gov Jerry Brown or
Asm Cheryl Brown or
Dr Emmet Brown?

And what in the hell is wrong with being in a Union?

The USA is a Union of States, a Marriage is a Union, a Union is a group of like minded people who want and need just wages..

A Union gives one protection against unfair labor practices, bargaining power equal to CEO's/Boards of Directors/Immortal Corporations..

AB474 is/was to help people who get SSI/SSP(an extra $199 a month would have been added to the $156.40 a month SSP Grant to get Single SSI recipients to 112% of poverty from about 90%, 90% is not adequate, SSP is the State Supplemental Payment, SSI is Supplemental Security Income, a person could get SSI with their SS(Social Security) or SSDI, if the person qualifies), whether they be Seniors or Disabled People, Disabled People don't become disabled cause they wanted to, no one likes being that way and has nothing to do with being in a Union, since Disabled People do not have one, they get Chickenfeed, no one gets rich off of SSI/SSP, anyone who thinks that people who get SSI/SSP are getting rich is dead wrong and does not know what they are talking about. Disabled People have limited mobility and being declared Disabled and unable to work, requires more than just a disability, there is education, the ability to work, the ability to compete against able bodied people, ones age, etc, etc.

The current SSI/SSP benefit in California is chickenfeed, sure the maximum benefit is $889.40 a month in 2015 and might be $900.40 a month in 2016(that depends on if there will be a Federal COLA or not in 2016 and at what rate the COLA is at in 2016), California is a very expensive place to live at and just cause one becomes disabled, does not mean that bills and such stop, life goes on, people who get SSI/SSP in CA, don't get Food Stamps cause of a State Policy called Cash Out that gives $10 in lieu of Food Stamps(SNAP/CalFresh) Benefits, people who get SSI/SSP are eligible for Care rates on their Electric/Gas bills, if they have such a bill, they are eligible for LiHEAP Credits/Grants, either on their Electric bill in the form of a check if they life in a sub-metered living arrangement(a mobile home park or apartment complex), LiHEAP is only available once a year, Weatherization help(note: LiHEAP and Weatherization help come from the Electric Utilities and not from Government, since it is cheaper for Electric Utilities to give out this help, than to build new power plants), these programs are need based and yes income plays a part in these two programs, SSI has it's own set of restrictive and archaic rules and limits that have not been in most case updated by Congress since 1972 and for savings since 1989 that are severely out of date, not that legislation hasn't been proposed of course, Republicans idea of reform is cuts and poison pills in Bills(poison pills makes unworkable laws, like the ABLE Act, 'one can save up for an expense beyond, the $2000 savings limit, if one was disabled before age 26', this was a Republican amendment, otherwise the bill would have gone nowhere fast and this Act is now Federal Law), even if the exiting benefits are needed(cruel and heartless cuts in the name of austerity, while giving Billionaires and Millionaires who can afford to pay taxes and not feel a thing, get tax cuts and get off scott free, useless oil subsidies in the multiple Billion Dollar range that tax payers pay for). I spend most of My extra income on repairs and on replacement of this or that and sometimes on something that I want to get, but then I have lots of time(extra income is after paying for the living expenses, bank statements bear that out, I've been accused of getting income from sources other than SSI twice by the IRS, noting was proved, just baseless Radical attacks), whether I like lots of time or not, naps I take since the mattress is old(a suitable replacement is expensive for Me), I watch or listen to the TV a lot, so I have to buy TV lamps to run the 57" DLP TV, which I can watch this TV without prescription glasses being worn, My PC motherboard needs replacement, so I bought parts to replace the motherboard w/a newer motherboard and this required a newer type cpu, which required a newer and larger case, so I built a PC(I have to wait until July so I can buy some X79 type compatible ram), it's not a marketable skill, since this is something a teenager could do and I'm older, the mobile home is a 1987 Fleetwood and has needed some renovation, I did some work a little at a time in both cases, like replacing 4 windows out of 7 so far(a contractor did this, as I don't have the skills and I have no tools for this), some caulking of cracks between drywall panels, replacing clothes, a new 5qt skillet, installing sticky gaskets in the electrical outlets/switches and baby proof plugs in any empty electrical socket(they do work, stops drafts, warm or cold), new prescription glasses, car parts, a gas range that needs repairs to one burner and a 28yr old gas heater that needs to be repaired(Weatherization could help with this in either Oct or Nov I'm told) so that I will have heat in the fall, winter and spring. So yeah I have My hands full, limited income does not help a bit.

I take care of and feed a large house cat, a female B&W Maine Coon(Long Haired) cat, She has 1/4" claws and feet just over 2 fingers wide, She can jump 4'2" straight up, except for Her, I live alone, She's 7 years old now, I've had Her for 5 years, since 2010, She came from a Shelter some 55-60 miles from Me.

Disabled People have disabilities that are usually not visible to the naked eye, like the following examples: Damaged ankle(stiff, prone to pain after an unknown distance, since the conditions that cause this is like OA, yet is unresponsive to any drugs, scars can be hidden under socks, the titanium screws are only visible to x-rays, an MRI is not advised due to ferrous metal impurity risks, ferrous metal is steel and nickel in this case), leg joint problems, damaged knee caps, hips/shoulders that had dislocated in the past, Osteoarthritis, core over heating problems, lower back pain, weight that pulls on ones spine(being tall, heavy and semi-mobile isn't fun), limited endurance, eyesight problems(being able to see details needs a decent amount of light, like in daylight, reading small text), severe anxiety, depression, concentration problems, etc, etc, etc.

Yes I know of all this since I get SSI/SSP, I'm severely disabled and I have been since 2003, I'm not lazy or a thief, what I have listed is what I have, I'm 6'1" tall, about 390lbs, White, Blue eyed and in July I will be 55yrs old. I live in a mobile home that I own outright(I have a clear title to it and I pay property taxes every year on it and I pay space rent for all 810sqft too, that is for renting the land My mobile home sits on, I'd love to move My place to its own land that I'd have to buy, but I lack the estimated $25,000.00 to do this) in a mobile home park, I own a 16yr old car that I'd like to replace soon, since some critical parts are getting hard to find, My car is a coupe, why do I have a coupe? I have long legs and you know the rest, coupes have bigger doors than Sedans, just big enough to allow Me to get in and out without Me being a contortionist(the seat is pushed almost all the way back, I'm Big and Tall), I'm hoping to have enough income one day to finance a used Ford Mustang since except for the Mustang, Ford makes only Sedans today and yes I like Fords, it's what My Dad and I liked and gravitated to, My current car is a Ford Escort zx2 Sport Hot Coupe, a 2yr only model, w/an automatic transmission(I was trained on an automatic transmission), some parts like NEW OEM Door Seals(weatherstripping) are now impossible to find anymore, the last time the car had new parts made for it was in 2008/2011, since some parts carried over to later models and some did not.

Well, at least we're not being vague, here.

But yes, the folks we serve at work live on SSI...and it ain't exactly a luxurious existence, here in Silicon Valley.

Whats wrong with being in a union is they force you to pay union dues which they use to fund Democrats campaigns to get elected. Democrats have destroyed this once great state.

The only destructive force at work in California is overpopulation. Especially population who can't think past infantile ideological limitations.

SSI is not Social Security, SSI is Supplemental Security Income.

SSI has no trust fund and is a part of the Federal budget, just like Military pay is and SNAP benefits are.

Social Security also has no impact on the National Debt, since Social Security has its own funding stream, that is called the FICA/Payroll tax on a pay check.

SSI is not SSDI either.

Well, really, most people on SSI, like myself, live in subsidized housing. And the higher our income goes up (like with cost of living increases), the rent goes up accordingly. So, it's not like I'd end up with that extra $90 in my pocket, anyway. It would just basically get reshuffled to the other govt agencies that fund the other subsidies, etc.

So, maybe this big push to reinstate the cuts, is really coming from the private management corporations that specialize in subsidized housing?

We still have it good in CA. Other states don't subsidize the federal SSI at all, or they do so with food stamps instead of a cash supplement, that you must spend only on food, as if you're too stupid to figure out your own food budget.

Anyway, we have it pretty good here. And if they reinstate that money, it won't directly impact my income much, from what I've experienced so far.
