The entire western slope of the Sierra's down to about Highway 99 in the Central Valley. I have felt earthquakes centered around Mono Lake, but just barely.

In the Bay Area, the news keeps saying that a big one is coming. A 100 year cycle or a 140 year cycle is closer and closer. But, it seems that nobody really cares about the earthquake. When people are leaving CA, that are talking about living cost, poor schools, bad traffic, ..., but earthquake is never a reason.

I've lived in the Central Valley of California for most of my life and I've felt about three. Not at all scary, actually, no one I know is even afraid of them. Two of them I just kept sitting on my couch watching TV but my dogs ran around barking and I looked out back and saw that a bunch of water had sloshed out of the pool. There was another one when I was about ten but I only found out about it the next day, it was so small I slept through it. And the other one came a few years back and I was startled so I stood under an archway in my house but I wasn't scared I was just startled and it wasn't any worse than the first two I described. Actually, to be quite honest, they were sort of fun. I know that sounds dumb but it just makes the ground shake a bit. It's not as though I've been around for a serious earthquake though, I'm sure those are very frightening. I'm not sure if you're from California but no native Californian I've ever met has expressed worry about earthquakes. I think it's the same for people from the South and Middle of the US, they probably don't get why people like me are terrified of tornados because they just aren't something to worry about.

In one word, NO. The faults that generate earthquakes have also created a wonder geology. They go hand in hand, no getting away from it. I find earthquakes exciting, they remind me that the earth is alive too.  |
