I'm not saying EVERYONE in California is like this, but I've noticed if you say anything critical about California, aside from the typical ranting about illegal Mexicans or socialists, people will shun you or resent you for your "negative attitude". Whether it's the drought, the poor schools, the unaffordability of housing and everything else. It seems like if you don't think California is Heaven on Earth people think you are crazy there.

Why? I have friends from states in the South, Midwest and Northeast and while most of them have some pride in where they live and still support their sports teams, they are willing to admit that their home state sucks or is below par in some regards. One of my good friends is from Indianapolis and he's more than willing to admit that Indiana kind of sucks in many ways. I have another friend from Ohio who also hated it there even though he is still a fan of all the Cleveland teams.

Californians on the other hand seem to feel a need to be #1 in everything. It's really like "America's America".

There are more Californians so you are going to face more reactions for criticizing that state compared to other states. it shouldn't be that hard to find Californians who criticize their state, i find it hard to believe you haven't come across any on this website.

Well, most know the problems but if they admit to them then they get asked why they are still there or haven't fixed it.

Now as a native Californian I love the State, well So Cal the most. It is the people (too many) the excessive rules and regulations (Excessive and at times stupid), taxes and fees (too high and too many) etc., that are the real problem. Oops that is a people problem and the people living there cannot admit it is their problem, not the physical State's problem.

Why should the COL in CA be so high? Note; weather and location have nothing to do with it. So why is it so high?

Have you been to Texas? In my experience, Texans are the most defensive about their state, although Texans say that Alaskans take first place for that.

Isn't this pretty much a universal reaction?

I lived in Texas. I had a flat tire and just about every person that drove by stopped and offered to help. In CA they would honk and yell and keep right on going, in most cases.

Texas is like CA, big and diverse as to topography, but is different in many ways and some are good and some are bad. In Alaska is just flat tooooo cold for me.

Yeah, California is very much a "me" culture and people are generally only interested in what they can take from you. That's why people in California/the West Coast get so furious if you approach them in public to ask them a question or make niceties ... they assume you want something from them or want to harm them, because that's the only reason THEY would ever approach a stranger.

Most people do that if you complain about their city or state. Visit the other forums. This is a no-brainer, OP. Did you really think it was exclusive to Californians?

Not exclusive no, but I notice Californians are especially defensive of their state. Even if you are a Californian like I am, it seems like nobody wants to hear any constructive criticism about California.

Try this topic in the New York forum and see what kind of reaction you get.
I'll guess that the response would be less muted than here.
