South OC would be better if most of it hadn't been built during the absolute nadir of urban planning in America. Too bad that "master planning" couldn't be undone.

San Diego comes in better pretty much on every single aspect. I can't think of anything OC does better than SD.

Orange County has more diverse food choices. I really like San Diego but it does not have the diversity of Orange County. For example Little Saigon in Westminster is the largest Vietnamese area outside of Vietnam. There are many great food choices there and the first 99 Ranch Market was started on Bolsa Ave. in Westminster.

The Little Seoul area in Garden Grove also has a large number of Korean restaurants and is the second largest Korean area in California after LA's Koreatown.

Orange County also ranks third in Asian American population.

Orange County home to third-largest Asian American population in U.S. - LA Times

Orange County is also very close to the Little India area in Artesia in L.A. County and the Cambodia Town in Long Beach.

One of the biggest advantages of Orange County is that it is close to L.A. without the hassle of living in L.A. In contrast San Diego is close to Tijuana.

This question has also been discussed before.

Orange County versus San Diego

OC doesn't have a Little Italy. SD does.

Shouldn't OC be compared to the Inland Empire instead of SD, since both just a collection of suburbs?

Except for a few areas south of the 8, San Diego is mostly a collection of suburbs like Tierrasanta, Clairemont, Serra Mesa, Linda Vista, Scripps Ranch, Mira Mesa, Rancho Penasquitos,Del Cerro,Carmel Valley,Black Mountain Ranch, Carmel Mountain Ranch, La Jolla, San Carlos, Pacific Beach etc. etc. In Orange County these would be separate cities but they all are called San Diego.

San Diego's Little Italy feels contrived and is just a small bundle of mid-rises.

At least it exists. OC never had one.

As for the "close to L.A. without the hassle of L.A." - that sounds more like a description of L.A. county cities such as Glendale, the San Gabriel Valley, or even Santa Clarita than Orange County. The only part of OC that fits the bill is inland north OC and that's indistinguishable from L.A. County. L.A. City is a nightmare but L.A. County isn't necessarily that much of a hassle depending upon where one is.

Except there is still a downtown center and urban core for the county. OC is literally a collection of suburbs strung together by congested freeways with no true center or downtown at all. Inland Empire is certainly a much more apt comparison seeing as they are just both suburban regions of LA.

Yeah if you exclude coastal OC, it definitely feels a lot more like the IE. I don't see that huge of a difference between places like Santa Ana, Tustin, Anaheim, Garden Grove, Orange, and Fullerton and IE places like Ontario, Rancho Cucamonga, Chino, Upland, Corona, Murrieta, etc. Nobody is denying that coastal OC has great beaches and tons of wealth, but inland OC isn't really all that special.
