As a California native (childhood in 70s/80s) I've never really come across too many rude/impolite people here, but I have heard of the legendary friendliness of the Midwest/South (although didn't really experience anything much beyond what I have in California in my limited traveling in those areas, more specifically the Midwest).

As for Southern California (L.A. specifically since that is where I grew up)...I think it really depends on where you live there and in what circles you move. I was in the South Bay area and it was super low-key and full of mellow down-to-earth people. All the people I knew there growing up were local/native for the most part and everyone was generally friendly and our communities were pretty close-knit. I never had any contact with the stereotypical people you hear about in L.A....all the up-and-coming types trying to make it in Hollywood, etc. When I met my husband, who had come from the Bay Area to try a career as a film editor, I had more contact with that world and it turned out that the vast majority were from other places and trying to fulfill that fantasy. So in my own experience it was more the transplants living that L.A. stereotype and being shallow, rude and obnoxious (one of the reasons my husband decided to leave the film industry and why we are now in the Bay Area) than the actual natives, who were on the whole completely cool and down-to-earth and most couldn't give two s**** about the whole Hollywood thing. Of course MMV.

I've recently been to 27 states and counting. I will say in my experience, this seems to be accurate.

OP is describing experience in the OC, so it is quite likely it is accurate.

And that is why I'm moving to Prescott, AZ. Talk about warm friendly people! I couldn't get over how warm and friendly the people we met in Prescott, AZ were.
Funny thing is, they were from Orange County, CA. Reason they moved to Prescott? To get away from all the rude inconsiderate people in OC.

Will you be keeping track of what neighbors have expired plates in AZ, as you now do in CA?(Per your other post), you would fit in great in FL.

I find you get back what you give most of the time in regards to people.
