San Luis Obispo Neighborhoods
My husband and I are trying to sort out the neighborhoods in SLO. We are older, 50 and 60, semi retired. Don't need night life, but we just love the downtown area.
We are trying to find a house in an area that is withing walking distance of good restaurants and shopping. Walking distance for us is a mile or two. Really liked the area around Chorro, Broad and Murray Streets, but it seemed a little noisy (road noise) and I heard that ambulances screech by at night?
Any suggestions?
thanks.

I live by downtown, peach and toro area. You do hear the freeway, though often not bad. Very nice houses on my side of peach st. Also, Mill street one block over (away from the freeway) is pretty quiet in the evening and weekend, but during the day it is a fairly used thorough fair, however, there are gorgeous houses by Mill/Johnson. You can be downtown in 5-10 minute walk, and all the way to the Mission in 12 minutes. Love walking to farmers market.
Chorro is a good area, but north of 101 has lots of Poly students, unless you live closer to the mountain.
I lived here off an on most of my life, so feel free to ask questions.

Thanks very much. I could use some pointers. We do want to stay clear of the Poly students. Which neighborhoods do you like best and why?

If you're on the west side of 101, stick close to the mountain. If you're east of 101, veer away from South Street.

Grimstuff, you seem quite knowlegeable on slo--can you tell me what the deal is with that Stonebridge area? I saw it for the first time last week and was bowled over.
Wow! I loved it. It's so different from the rest of the town.
Also, what do you think of the Islay area? Love the San Luis Drive part of town, but what little was available was priced pretty high. Are prices coming down in SLO or are they holding, as it is such a desirable area?
Thanks in advance for any light you can shed.

Hi again.
Checked out your neighborhood in the area around Mill/Johnson today. Also Palm and Pepper. Very nice area. The homes have with lots of charm. Any issues with noise from the Poly students there? Thnx!

not really. the closer you get to santa rosa, you do get more poly students. but generally quiet, a few times you get the drunks that walk by, but more funny than hassle.

Great! I like the sound of that. We were down there again today. The challenge now is to find a house.....

I am racking my brain trying to remember where South St. is. Is it down there on the bottom of Pismo St. near So. Higuera?
