If they had the oppressive heat and humidity Florida has they would be recruiting people to live there.
And if Alaska broke off the continent and floated down to Hawaii, they could grow pineapples there.

I sure as heck hope that doesn't happen, because Alaska is where I plan to live because I like the cold weather and long winters. I have also been considering, for over a year, to have urbanized metropolitan areas built in the state.

I'll speak to the part of California I know best - Southern California:

The Los Angeles Philharmonic, the Los Angeles Master Chorale, the Los Angeles Opera, world class art museums, foreign films readily available, genuine ethnic restaurants everywhere, the San Diego Zoo, the World War II ships permanently moored as public museums (aircraft carrier in San Diego, and battleship in San Pedro), and on and on.

I don't know. Look at all the people that love NY, TX, IL, etc... in spite of their crappy weather. And they don't even have a decent coastline, redwoods or high mountains. If CA weather wasn't as good as it is, I think more of the West Coast would spread out more evenly throughout the PNW and CA. But the reality is, the further south one goes the more moderate the air and ocean temps become. That will not change, thus many ppl from around the world will continue to flock to CA much beyond anyone's life time on this forum. I'm reminded of that regularly when I see things like cruise ships parked in front of our house or sunsets like this.

The Nethercutt, Santa Anita, Del Mar, north SD county beaches, and on and on

And if several people were to cut the figure of Illinois out of its place and carry it over, and drop it next to Alaska, I'd be more than happy.

Then the Russians would much more easily invade and Sarah Palin would surely freak out!

On a serious note, what about just working to save some $$ and making a visit to CA or AK for a week? It would do you a world of good.

After graduating from college, I took a long, x-c roadtrip with a few friends. We hit lots of cities and nat'l parks and more. Boy did I get an awakening about how little I knew about so many places...

You know what I miss most about CA? The Public Higher Ed system despite its flaws is the most flexible/comprehensive/quality and not to mention accessible system of higher education I've seen in this country. No other state comes even close to what the UCs/CSUs/CCs in CA offer except MAYBE Massachusetts. Living in Ohio the past few years, I've come to appreciate the sheer breadth of choices CA offers to all of its residents regardless of income category. I'll give CA a solid B on that alone.
