It's a sensitive issue with Serra and I see both sides. Indians were treated horribly in the missions and did all of the hardest work. The Spaniards did believe they were better than them. Serra considered them like his kids...people who needed a strong band and needed to "serve," probably. I guess they at least weren't considered 3/5 of a person? Unfortunately such attitudes about natives prevailed at the time and only the very few like Bartolome de las Casas a few hundred years before saw it any differently. That doesnt make it right and it certainly doesn't in our modern view but that's how it was.
