This is the prototypical city-data thread :

- Original Poster hasn't logged in for a loooooong time
- Thread is over 4 years old, but people keep it alive
- Posters generally don't bother reading what has already been posted on the thread, so LOTS of repeats
- Posters apparently don't even bother reading the first post, as they don't address OP's question(s)
- (and thus) the thread goes off on all sorts of tangents, and has for years - but it is still alive

Here's how I'd qualify:
- Awesome community #1
- Amazing outdoor activities (mountain biking #1, rock climbing #2, snow sports #3)
- Access to real food (farmer's markets and quality grocery stores)
- Singles in their 30's
- Access to cultural activities nearby if not in town (I can drive to this if need be. I'll take nature first).
Personally, I don't think those are the right criteria. OP, you asked for *my* idea of the best mountain town in CA, not where *you* would like to live. I don't care about yuppie, coffee-klatch, be-in towns.

Personally, I really like Mariposa - but it is a *town*, not a city. (I also like Sonora.)

+ Out of the way, if you stay off the two main streets, it is pretty quiet
+ Away from the smog of the central valley
+ biking, hiking, rock climbing, skiing, fishing, etc.
+ QUIET (off the highways)
+ Yosemite - 'nuf said
+ once you get accepted, the people are nice (or at least as nice as the worst you ever were when in town)
+ enough shopping and restaurants for the daily grind
+ Head into the valley for "night life"

Cons :
- really dry air (humidity around 20).
- lots of moronic yuppies driving thru town on the way to Yosemite
- fires

I choose Bridgeport. It's very beautiful scenery. Two of my son's were conceived by Bridgeport... + pretty good fishing & camping at the lakes.

My mother knew when and where I was conceived....and she told me .

I also have one body part (visible to the general public) that looks like a copy of my dad's same body part...so she used to joke that "you know I didn't fool around with the milkman" .

My take, I don’t think there Is any town in Ca that meets all the criteria. I lived in Bishop under the delusion that it might be the one- for 25 years. The only pros are it’s proximity to the Sierra. It’s cons far outweighed the pros. I had to import a single lady in order to establish a relationship. All locals are otherwise’ retreads’ , inbreds’, intellectually mediocre, The town is hot as hell in summer.
I decided to leave the USA altogether and move to Chamonix Mont Blanc which is the overall best resort for both skiing and mountain climbing in the world.

OMG! How can you afford to live in Chamonix? Scenic as all get-out, too!

These, and Scotts Valley, except they were reduced to ashes recently. .

Blue Lake? IDK, OP; mountain towns tend to be surrounded by trees, which isn't. something people are volunteering for, at the moment...

If in CA, I like Truckee.

However, I much prefer places like Bend, Oregon or Boulder, Colorado to any of the mountain towns we have here in CA.
