Default Modesto, Stockton, or Merced?????

Hey Folks,

I admit, I'm a tightwad, lowballer. These three cities have some affordable homes for a single man. Which would you recommend? I'm university educated, speak some Spanish, but I love Thai food--if those are any clues.
Which place would be the best to invest/live. I currently work as a school bus driver. Thanks in advance for your comments.

I'm partial to Modesto. I have friends that live there and LOVE it. I think the people are more friendly and diverse there.

Just my 2 cents. Good luck!

I'm moving this to general CA, since these towns are quite far from San Jose & San Francisco...

Oh, and I used to live in Stockton, and would NOT recommend it... don't know much about Modesto & Merced, but I'd assume they are somewhat better.

I would pick Turlock kind of in the middle of all of them. I also heard that the prices are dropping very fast

Quite frankly, Stockton is an armpit. Modesto isn't much better.

Merced. It's a college town, and there's much to do. Great shopping there too.

I live in Ceres and Stockton is not a good area (none of them really are) and merced isn't either. I'd say Modesto or Turlock (much nicer area). This is the first year (in 3 years) that our county isn't labeled the Car theft capitol of the country.

Stockton is just plain gross. Any Central Valley city, to be honest, isn't going to be that great, but Stockton is probably the grossest of them all.

If you are going to live in any of those places you might as well move out of state to somewhere nice. Those are some of the worst places in California.
