Fresno and Madera are conservative areas. Granted, not as conservative as the Southeastern states, Arizona, or Utah, but they're not hotbeds of liberalism, either.

An aside: The most liberal places in the Central Valley are Sacramento, Stockton, and Chico. Sacramento is so large that, even with its thriving public sector and influx of transplants from the liberal Bay Area, the natives are usually more conservative and still have some "sway." Stockton is merely Democratic because of its high Hispanic population, not as liberal as the Bay Area or even Sacramento comparatively. Chico is a small college city full of transplanted, Bernie-lovin' college students from the Bay Area.

I guarantee you will find progressives and like living better if you try some of the Sierra foothill towns. Something of a drive, but cooler and well worth it. Hilly, beautiful, unlike the central valley. If you haven't experienced the central valley, you really ought to visit before deciding to move there.
