Gotcha.. So if im understanding coastal california correctly, the least expensive areas would be as follows:

San diego

Ventura/oxnard

Nowhere near bay area

Way northern but theres nobody there so why bother

Ventura maybe cheaper than San Diego, not sure but San Diego is definitely cheaper than LA and especially the Bay Area. Anything you'd pay in rent in San Francisco-Oakland-San Jose will be about half in San Diego.

Kind of surprised you haven't looked in the Santa Cruz mountains. I'm seeing smaller studios/cottages from $1100 and up.

There's a small cottage in Felton for rent for $1200. Have a look at craigslist.

Original poster, why not just invite roommates or join a group of roommates? You have an advantage in that market, being a female, since most of the cheaper places are composed of girls and looking for another girl. But everybody has a roommate in the Bay Area who makes under 100k.

Op, for example this:

single room available

They have an artist there. It is in SF. Two roommates are female.

Rent $600. Lots of places like that in SF. Going in the "rooms and shares" section under "housing" in sfbay.craigslist.org and typing "artists" in the search bar returned 88 results.
