Culturally and physically a lot of California reminds me of states like Idaho and Montana. Particularly the area around Chico. Wouldn't you agree?

Absolutely. Chico looks exactly like Idaho and Montana.

San Bernardino mountains/San Gabriel Valley have an honorable mention in SoCal mountain culture. The three tallest peaks are within a 50 mile radius.

Never been to Idaho or Montana, but the area around Chico looks like the Northern Sacramento Valley. Almond, Walnut and fruit orchards, rice fields, pastures, etc.... Palm trees here and there. The nearest thing to it in another state is Southern Oregon and it doesn't really look like that. I've been to Eastern Washington, Nevada, Utah, Colorado and Wyoming and it certainly doesn't look like those. It is what it is.

Read "The Nine Nations of North America." According to that schema, yes, there are parts of California that are included in "The Empty Quarter."

Except that you often cannot see the mountains with all the smog.

I don't agree either. Idaho and Montana are HUGE states with very diverse landscapes. I think you might be able to make a case for Southern Idaho (Twin Falls or Idaho Falls), but def not the Boise Area or CDL. I haven't seen all of Montana, but the parts I've seen resembled Wyoming, not CA. In terms of politics? CA is much more culturally diverse and a different brand of conservatism I've seen.

Western Montana doesn't look like anything in CA.

Southern Wyoming along I-80 could pass for the Mojave Desert in certain spots.

Greeley, CO would fit in the Central Valley.

But not much else, really.

There are many rural areas all over Kalifornia that physically and culturally resemble other areas in many Western States.

I have hunted all over rural and mountainous Kalifornia since the late 70's and also Idaho, Montana, Colorado and Nevada. lots of smilarities.
