Arsty beach towns in California?
hello Californians! a friend and i are planning on moving to the west coast this autumn and we're looking for an upbeat artsy town/city. We'd really love to be a bikeride away from the beach, and we'd like to pay around $700-$800/month for rent. Is there anywhere on the coast like this? My first interest was Oregon, but after discovering their coast cities' average temp is around 55*, i'm opting for somewhere further south. yay california?

Laguna Beach is a very artsy beach town. I don't know about the rents though. It's a very expensive place to live.

There is McKinleyville, Trinidad [ a bit pricey ], Ferndale, Arcata, Samoa, Manilla and Orick here in Humboldt county that are all right on the coast and $700 to $800 can get you into a 2 or even 3 bedroom apartment. For the most part the beach is just a bicycle ride away if not closer like Manilla and Samoa. Ferndale is very artsy and has a kinetic sculpture race and show every year. Fortuna is just minutes away from Ferndale and the beach and is significantly warmer. Google Humboldt county and check us out. Arcata being a college town is also inclined towards the arts.

Try Cambria on the central coast. San Luis Obispo county. A large art community near Hearst Castle.

I second Cambria. I love that little town and would like to get in another visit sometime in the future. Very quaint and charming. Lots to do and see.

What size town? Cambria is super duper small. Santa Cruz is fairly big.

The whole Mendocino, North Coast area is an artisit's paradise. Anyplace you throw a paintbrush or a canvas it will land on an artiste!
And, i think they are all starving as there are so many of them!
