Hey! My husband got a job with PG&E and we will relocating from Carlsbad in July. We are torn on deciding which town to choose. It seems Los Osos and Arroyo Grande seem to be the best for our budget. We have two elementary aged kids and one in preschool. We fell in love with Los Osos, but I’m a little concerned about the limit of after school activities for kids. Arroyo Grande seems like a great town to raise kids in also, and I love that it seems like it’s a little sunnier than Los Osos. Any input would be so appreciated!

Can’t go wrong with either of those two towns. More sun in Arryo? Mmmm, maybe a little, dunno. Not much difference. Los Osos plus is proximity to Morro Bay and Montana d’Oro … and, of course, the straight short shot into SLO. Enjoy

Los Osos is a sleepy bedroom community. Good for peace and quiet. Arroyo Grande is part of the Five Cities area and has much better proximity to shops, etc. while maintaining a small-town feel. It even has a little downtown area. Arroyo Grande is warmer since it is further away from the water, and Los Osos can be quite windy.

Will your husband be commuting into SLO? If so, the drive from Los Osos will be easier, but even the drive from AG is nothing compared to the drive from Carlsbad south into the Golden Triangle.

Personally I would choose Arroyo Grande. I have a friend in the Five Cities area and it sounds family friendly. (She is married with a toddler.) Also, Los Osos doesn't seem to have the same curb appeal one finds in AG.

Located south of Arroyo Grande and the Five Cities area is Nipomo. There's a proposed mixed-use housing and commercial development planned for the area:

"Moving to SLO county, need help deciding which area to move"....whichever area would keep Hwy 101 commute time to a minimum. South County traffic is miserable.

Los Osos has a lot of problems, like sewer, water, garbage rates about to double. If you're purchasing a home, be sure and get a realtor who will tell you the real deal. You also have to love fog if you want to live on the coast. But, it's great for commuting to SLO. Traffic is pretty awful in Pismo/AG, especially during commute times. If you were considering North County, I would recommend Templeton. It's the most family friendly town around and has the best schools.

Los Osos will be foggier. And it always seems colder to me. AG has a nice village area with good restaurants and pretty good farmers market. And it’s usually warm and sunny. Nice place to have dinner in the evening. There is a park for little kids just across the creek. AG also has a Walmart and In N Out Burger. It’s close to Lopez Lake which has excellent fishing. You are close to Pismo and the Pismo Preserve is a good place to mountain bike or hike with great views of the ocean. Avila Beach is near by too. And overall, AG is a very safe town. Best areas are east of the 101.

We moved from Arroyo Grande to Carlsbad 10 years ago. So I know both.

Los Osos îs sleepy, and you will find yourself driving into SLO for almost everything, especially kids activities.

If SLO is out of your budget, then AG would be my recommendation. Tons of families there. And good schools too.

Stay away from Nipomo, and Grover Beach/Oceano areas due to gang activity.
