Anybody else wonder how San Diego county would have developed if it's downtown was 15 miles inland like LA and Tijuana? The El Cajon mountains would soar over the skyline. At times San Diego feels flat when the marine layer is too strong. Being close to the mountains offers opportunity for expensive Beverly Hills-like real estate over looking the city.

I'd say Mesa is about 15 mile inland. Having downtown 15 miles inland would give room for beach suburbs to add more personality and charm. A 20 minute drive to La Jolla wouldn't be so bad. Plus skiing could be discovered by more people. You're still not too far to experience beaches. Great hiking spots would be closer.

If all this were true, El Cajon would have outgrown San Diego. Have you ever been to El Cajon in summer? It is not pleasant and would be worse with tall buildings.

I'll give it my best....

What if they could put a huge glass bubble over SD and then lower it into the bay? The whole city would be this wondrous "Sea World" (for lack of a better term) where you could watch orcas go swimming by from your living room. Really, how much cooler could it get?

Well San Jose seems to be doing fine and its pretty inland from the coast. The residents can still take advantage of ocean benefiets with a short drive.

Hmm no, no and heck no. The San Diego skyline is perfectly visible from Coronado, the 5 Frwy and actually the waterfront skyline is what makes San Diego unique. Only San Francisco and Seattle have attractive skylines by the waterfront on the US west coast. San Diego is so unique since it feels like a small beach town metropolis next to Mexico with the nearby navy and international airport right by downtown. San Diego is great just the way it is.

Hell no. San Diego's port is not only the reason why it exists as a city, it is the reason why the US/Mexico border is where it is. If not for that, Santa Barbara would have been California's southernmost big city. The city being by the sea makes it attractive and gives it its identity.

Downtown San Jose would have taken Downtown San Diego to the cleaner! That's why Downtown San Diego is almost at the same level playing field with the ocean. Downtown SJ has very nice urban layout with university, public spaces, high rise of all types and much fancier and cleaner urban landscape. It simply doesn't need the ocean. San Diego's downtown: oceanview with waterfront on the bay, nice areas in several blocks with basic urban landscape that has high rises of all types. The urban landscape isn't as fancy as Downtown SJ, and there's no major university here.
