The name of the state is pronounced Ca-LA-fornia, not Ca-LEE-fornia.

So people using CalI aren't even pronouncing it right. They should say and write CalA if they insist on using it as a shortened state name.

Nope, I don't say it Ca-LA-fornia. I pronounce it Cal'-IF-ornia. Hispanics would use a Spanish version with continental vowels so they would pronounce it Cawl-ee-for'-nee-ah. I forget the derivative, is it Spanish in origin, or Amerind? I know it comes from queen Califia which was a Spanish mythical figure.

Ok, I just looked it up. It's of Spanish origin. Fascinating story.

Btw, this thread is amusing. I'm a native, born and raised and could care less about "Cali"
Just don't call it Shirley!

If you could care less, then why don't you? Just messin' with you. Just hate when people use that phrase incorrectly. Carry on.

I write Cali, but I never say “Cali.” It’s probably annoying to others because it’s cutesy infantalized speech, like sammies or samich (sandwich) or veggies. Veggies really annoys me.
