Greetings all,

I just wanted to ask a quick question in regards selling an old vehicle. Is it possible to sell a vehicle without having to pass the smog test? If so, where can the car be sold to?

I've heard about selling old vehicles to DMV, but how does one come across that? What are the requirements to sell old vehicles to DMV?

Also, are there any other places you guys may know where i can sell my vehicle to?

I know at this point no one is going to want a car without having the smog check test passed, so the next step would be selling it somewhere else?

Any Advices? I'd be gladly appreciative for any feedback you guys may want to share.

Thanks.

How old? What fuel type?

Gasoline powered 1975 year model or older do not need to be smog checked.
Diesel powered 1997 year model and older do not need to be smog checked.

If it doesn't fall within those two categories, you'll still have a few options. Get the emissions cleaned up, which should increase your resale value. List it on LA Craigslist as a non-roadworthy vehicle. List it on Craigslist outside of the state.

Few old cars sold the seller does the smog check. The buyer takes care of that. Place a Craigslist ad. Price it fair and reduce the price each week till it sells.

If your car is really a piece of junk and won't pass smog, you can turn it in under the Cash for Clunkers program. California Cash for Clunkers Program . It does have to be drivable and registered, but there aren't a lot of other requirements. We did this with a very ancient car and got $1000, which is more than we could have gotten any other way.

Sell it to CarMax or another dealer. They will take cars that can't pass smog, especially if you are doing a trade in on another car. They often won't care about it passing smog because they can put it into the dealer auction and/or ship them to another state for sale. Cash for Clunkers probably does the same thing.

Or, if you have a favorite charity, ask if they'd like the car. If so, then you can take a tax write off on it.

State law states that the seller is responsible for the smog check.

I believe you have to have had the car smogged and registered to you for two years before it's eligible

You can try Craigslist or one of the Car for sale facebook groups, but if it won't smog you have to make sure that in the bill of sale you indicate that it is being sold for parts only and have the buyer sign it, if you don't they can take you to small claims court and you will have to pay to have it smogged or give them their money back

Yes, it has to have been registered in California (not necessarily to the current owner) for the past two years. But it does NOT have to pass smog again in order to be eligible for the program. They take cars that fail smog.
