Possible move to California. (Lancaster, Palmdale: houses, to buy, schools)

My husband and I are looking to possibly move our family to California. We are looking to be stationed at Edwards AFB. What are good areas to live in? I have heard horrible things about Lancaster and Palmdale. I have two young children and one goes to school so the last thing I want is to live in a place where I am afraid for them to go outside. So if anyone knows where alot of the military famlies live off base or any good place to buy a house that would be in a good town/community to raise kids in let me know.

Edwards is still untouched as far as desert beauty is concerned. You'll appreciate the nighttime star gazing along with the natural beauty during the day. So long as the Angelenos can stay in their neck of the woods, it should remain beautiful for years to come. We can all see what the did to Palmdale/Lancaster. My suggestion would be the possibility of living in Rosamond. You'll see a tad bit of Angeleno influence but just avoid the local bar and you'll be ok. Houses should still be relatively affordable also.

We came to Cali as a Military Family. Stationed at Travis. We loved it'd here. I'm not sure about the bases you mentioned. What branch is your hubby in? Oh, The on base schools rocked.
