I'm spending Christmas in Lake Tahoe and I would like to try my hand at skiing again. It's been ages and I'll be with two other novices. I'm thinking cross-country might be a bit more manageable than downhill.

The house we rented is 5 mins away from Homewood - which I'm told is where the locals go to avoid the tourists and crowds. Also Rubicon Wilderness Trails are out the back door of the house.

Can we just rent skis and boots (etc.) and go into the Rubicon Wilderness Trails? Would it be best to go to an actual lodge like Tahoe XC and get a lesson and pass for X-Mas day. Are things open on X-Mas day? Other lodges that you recommend?

Any input/caveats/suggestions appreciated...

Not sure Homewood itself is the best place for beginners.

What you want is a place where the learning area and green runs are served by detachable quads. The last thing you want is to deal with some sort of tiny fast moving rinky dink lift when trying to learn. A larger place like Heavenly may be better, but watch out for the crowds and the lift tickets are expensive.

[mod cut] Just take a one-day beginner's class. My first time on skis I took the Mammoth Mtn. first timer's one day school, and at mid day we were offered the option to (1) return to more instruction in the afternoon, (2) take off and enjoy, or (3) take off and return to the class.

I took off at noon and never looked back. I returned to Mammoth 6 of the next 8 weekends and by about my 4th weekend I was skiing off the expert trails including Cornice and Climax off the top. Back then they didn't groom Cornice and it really had a cornice (20 ft drop to 45 degree slope). I hear these days they groom Cornice so there is no drop. Isn't that misrepresentation, a Cornice with no cornice?

Take refresher class. And yes, Mammoth is much better than Tahoe. I've skied both and Mammoth rules! I wish they hadn't instigated airline service. Back when I learned skiing Mammoth was exclusively Los Angeles property because the road from Yosemite was closed in winter and the only way to get to Mammoth was to drive. (My best time was about 4-1/2 hours.)

Please enjoy Tahoe ski areas. Leave Mammoth for us Angelinos.
