Default towing a car behind a rental truck

Anyone have experience towing their car behind a rental truck. I am moving from San Francisco to Pittsburgh, PA and am considering towing my Honda Accord behind a Budget rental truck. Any experiences, advice, recommendations will be appreciated. Thank you

We did it from CA to NC. We got the cheapest hitch where only the two front tires are raised rather than the trailer where the whole car rides on it. We had no problems and were surprised the Budget truck could get up to 65 MPH in some places along HWY 40. My husband drove, but I don't think you can back up at all. So, just be prepared to park where you don't need to back up for gas and hotels. Other than that, you will be fine and from our experience there is no need to get the more expensive trailer to tow the car. Good luck!

Some cars should not be towed with wheels on the ground,, my Jeep for instance. Make sure you check that out first. If you can tow it, I still recommend putting it on a trailer. The tow mounts that attach to the front of the car can damage it. A rear wheel drive care with automatic trans often cannot be towed on the ground or front wheels up. Best and safest is to put it on a full trailer,, now,, your route will be on I80, which can be icy this time of year, I know of more than one person who has wrecked on I80 on ice towing a trailer.. Also, get a bra or other cover for the car, if you are towing on a sanded road the sand will get kicked up and destroy your paint job, grille and windshield.

I towed my car behind a rental car from Phoenix, AZ to Corvallis, OR a number of years ago. Numerous hassles with dysfunctional brake lights on rental trailer, car stability on trailer, backing up without jack-knifing, etc. If your Accord is older than a 2001 model, I would sell it instead. If you have previous experience in trailers and towing, that counts a bit more in your favor. Given the overall cost of moving, whatever small loss might be involved in selling a used car is neglegible.

My husband did it with his brothers Land Rover from CA to ID and didnt have any problems with Penske. We will be doing it again this January moving my Mom from CA to TX. I think you just need to understand you can't go as fast in the truck darting in and out of traffic like you might in a regular car.

Just need to take your time and make sure it is all tied down properly. I know when we make the move, we will be doing what the previous poster suggested. We will be selling our cars here and buying there because we were going to replace them anyway.

I've logged about 12,000 miles that way.
*Make sure you use a car Carrier/not a trailer.
*Make sure to have your car "Profesionally" installed on the trailer.
*Drive safely and check the car trailer along the way...

You will be fine...
