Letting the water flow from the Sierras back down to the San Joaquin would solve the problem of water contamination. Why the B of R didn't just open up the Friant Dam instead of building that damned canal makes absolutely no sense.
Contractors making contributions to politicians who then said lets do it this way.

From 1987 to 1990, we caught & released black bass & catfish on the San Joaquin River, from Firebaugh toward Los Banos, north.

We caught Striped Bass & catfish on the Delta/Mendota & the California Aqueduct. We followed the Delta/Mendota canal from the Delta to Firebaugh. In 1989, a man from Soquel caught a 66lb + oz Striped Bass in the San Luis O'Neill Forebay, using a homemade j*g.
