If I had the chance to get out of Bakersfield to go to Fresno then I would.

It cracks me up when people say they prefer the "dry heat" of the desert to humidity...I don't know about anyone else, but when it's over 100 degrees, hot is HOT, regardless of dry or wet heat.

Have you ever been in the South (AL, MS etc) during summer?

Yes, I was in New Orleans last summer, and also spent a summer in DC, and it was incredibly hot. That said, when I worked at a summer camp in the Sierras and we'd go to Fresno on our days off, it was equally miserable...when it's so hot you don't want to go outside.

Default Fresno or Bksfld

There are a few pluses to Bakersfield. They seem to have more parks, the town is smaller with less congestion and it's close to L.A. On the other hand, the air is a little worse in Bakersfield (particulates) but if you have asthma, you might want to reconsider moving to either town.

Fresno over Bakersfield. Fresno has grown a lot and is much more of a "city" than I would have expected. I moved here from the Bay Area and at first was reluctant but became pleasantly surprised. Lots of nice shops, restaurants, sports, concerts, and minutes to Yosemite, Bass Lake, and Shaver Lake. The mayor and police cheif have squashed crime and continue to do so. I had a chance to take a job back to the Bay Area but like Fresno so I stayed.

By the way...like any larger city, you have your bad and good sides of town. Most people only see Fresno from Hiway 99. which I have to agree is ugly as sin, but if you take Hiway 41 North towards Yosemite you will get to the North East side of Fresno which is as nice as any other area. The N.E. side of town is also in the Clovis school districts which I have experienced to be better than any Nor Cal schools my kids have attended. You have to visit the area to see what I am talking about, at least that's what I had to do. I never heard anything good about Fresno growing up in Monterey and thought I was moving to a cowboy, gang infested, crime ridden, desert. It is NOTHING like that at all. Most people don't go to Fresno to know the great side of town, so the reputation will take a while to get better. My friends and family are always shocked when they come to visit.

And Fresno continues to see many things that would surprise people.

Limón, the popular San Francisco Peruvian restaurant, is opening a Fresno location today.
