i must post this re: Santa Cruz
LBAMspray.com
Because i love Santa Cruz so much i talk it up alot on this forum.
I've posted this link before and i don't think that anyone responded to it.
I feel compelled to post it again because, though i freely encourage people to be open to Santa Cruz county, there is this problem. And it's a distressing one. A very distressing one!
And it's not just happening in Monterey county and Santa Cruz county and surrounding areas but is scheduled to move north to the S.F. Bay area. arrrggggghhhhhhhh. and will, more likely than not, (unless we can stop it) happen beyond!
Some people don't blink an eye at this but i think it needs to be known.
And for all of you who do live in S.C., i hope you'll do all you can to join the protest in whatever way you can.
The link to the web-site i provided above gives information about what you can do. It can be as simple as making a phone call. Every little bit of help helps .... hopefully! Thanks.

Perhaps i should provide a quote explaining what the issue is. I added the word "counties" in ( ) in two places to clarify this statement.
Here:
"California's Dept. of Food & Agriculture (CDFA) has a permit from the US-EPA to Aerially Spray untested, unwanted pesticides on the cities (entire counties) of (and wild habitats neighboring) Monterey, Santa Cruz, Alameda, San Jose and San Francisco every month until 2010. CDFA has already crop dusted our Monterey Peninsula twice in 2007 and Santa Cruz (county) once. CDFA is systematically intentionally deceiving the public by falsely claiming that eradicating the LBA moth is an emergency - even though the moth does not harm humans at all - in sharp contrast to the West Nile Virus which has killed several people; and even though CDFA cannot document a single dollar of damage caused by the LBA moth to California's agriculture or ecosystems - even though the LBA moth has been here for years - if not decades!"

Yeah, it's funny how California does that, even though practically every citizen is against it. And the weird thing is that the manufacturers of the pesticides (and pheromone in this instance) are making vast profits on getting California to use their products - perhaps with no-bid contracts. And then you see the politicians living beyond their supposed means. Probably just some kind of weird coincidence.
But I'd like to hear from supporters of these aerial spraying programs ..... are there any California folks here who are in favor of having chemicals indiscriminately dumped on their families?

They sprayed nightly for the med fly's down here in LA for a long time. Never did eradicate the med fly, but they did kill off all natural frogs, salamanders, June bugs, etc,,
They kept claiming how safe it was, but warned to not leave pets or elderly folk out at night. They also warned everyone to cover their cars.

Here are some points i pulled from another web-site regarding the spraying.
HOPE - Gov. Schwarzenegger Aerially Spraying Untested Pesticides on Children of Monterey Bay for LBA Moth, 2007-2008
Vital Facts --
* Spray Myths vs Facts *
1. False Emergency -- Though it may eventually pose a problem, the LBA moth is NOT an Emergency.
LBA Moth Overview
2. The two Checkmate pesticides sprayed on us are not just pheromones, they are an untested cocktail of secret chemicals, and the little we know about those chemicals is that they are not harmless. (EPA definition of "pesticide".)
(Pesticide Harm Overview)
3. A far more effective solution exists – Targeted pheromone-baited hanging Sticky Traps.
(Graphic showing targeted use of Use of Sticky Traps)
4. A well-respected Invasion Biology expert says Eradication of the widespread LBA moth is impossible.
5. No Public Health Agency, State or federal, is collecting, investigating or evaluating the hundreds of complaints of unusual symptoms arising during and right after the aerial spraying of humans.
6. Not even one Elected Official approved aerial spraying - only bureaucrats.
7. CDFA cannot document a single dollar of harm to California Agriculture or ecosystems - even though the LBA moth has been here for years and maybe decades.

STOP the LBAM Aerial and Ground Spraying in S.F. Bay Area Region
If you live in Monterey and Santa Cruz Counties and the San Francisco Bay Area, you will be aerial sprayed with pesticides starting June 1, 2008 by the California Department of Agriculture (CDFA) in their attempt to eradicate the light brown apple moth (LBAM). You will be sprayed 9 months a year and for several years.
Anyone reading this post, please contact California Governor Schwarzenegger and U.S. Senator Barbara Boxer. The LBAM pesticide spray has known health side effects.

Hey, thanks for bringing this thread back to the "front page".
I've posted it a few times in the last few months but it doesn't get much attention which kinda reflects the complacency happening everywhere.
It seems people have their heads in the sand about this and/or just feel powerless to stop the "powers that be".

Let's not get carried away over the spraying since it is not pesticide. I, also recall the aerial spraying over Los Angeles county & it was malathion. Contrary to one person's opinion, the spraying did knock out the Med fly & a variety of dangerous pests from tropical regions. My orange tree is used by the county dept of agriculture as a trap for whatever is flying around.
Fruit flies could devastate California's citrus crop as well as groves of many other fruit trees. This has occurred in parts of Arizona/Texas/Florida & spraying is an effective means to control invasions of insects. I certainly understand the concern about spraying anything into the air, esp pesticides, but I also know that our state's # 1 business is agriculture.
I don't recall major problems after past aerial spraying but understand that these poisons can cause medical problems later in life.

LBAMspray.com .................
LIGHT BROWN APPLE MOTH - (LBAM) FACTS
* State and Federal Officials overreact to LBAM and have initiated a massive multi-county pesticide spray operation over populated urban areas with low flying planes.
* LBAM has caused virtually no crop damage in California. The damage incurred to growers is from restrictions and quarantines put in by State and Federal agencies.
* The LBAM has a fly radius of no more than 400 feet, and yet the aerial spraying is over residential areas and not agricultural areas.
* CheckMate OLR-F and LBAM-F product labels state that they are a "biochemical".
* CheckMate OLR-F and LBAM-F are pesticides by the EPA's own definition.
* CheckMate OLR-F and LBAM-F are biochemical pesticides that will linger around for 30 days.
* Let's make it clear - the CDFA's aerial biochemical spray is not just a one-time application. You will be sprayed every 30 days, at least 9 months per year of every year until two life cycles after the very last moth is found.
* Both CheckMate OLR-F and LBAM-F warning labels state, "Hazard to Humans and Domestic Animals. Harmful if absorbed through the skin. Causes moderate eye irritation. Avoid contact with skin eyes or clothing. Harmful if inhaled. Avoid breathing vapor or spray mist." Their warning labels also state, "Environmental Hazard - Do not apply to water or areas where surface water is present". Spray drifts and CheckMate OLR-F and LBAM-F will contaminate our water supply, the open ocean and the Monterey Bay Sanctuary.
* Acute toxicity to fish and moderate toxicity to aquatic invertebrates
* Steve Hartmeier, president of Suterra, makers of CheckMate OLR-F and LBAM-F, refuses to disclose all of the agents in the pesticide they will be on spraying you.
* Tricaprylyl Methyl Ammonium Chloride is yet another component to be very concerned with.
* CheckMate OLR-F and LBAM-F have only undergone short-term tests on rats and rabbits and results prove positive for adverse reactions. Suterra states, "Long-term studies on the active ingredients have not been done, however, no adverse effects expected." We are to be the human guinea pigs.
*EPA waved routine Safety tests and Eco reviews.
* During a 3-day LBAM aerial spray over Monterey, an 11-month old baby got sick and was admitted to Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula for severe respiratory problems.
* The Light Brown Apple Moth has been in Hawaii for more than 100 years. Their Agricultural Agency does NOT consider it to be a "significant pest". "In fact, LBAM may actually be considered a biocontrol agent for serious invasive weeds, such as gorse and blackberry in Hawaii."
* "LBAM populations in citrus orchards are normally kept at low levels by a combination of biological and environmental factors. Chemical intervention is often not needed." -State of New South Wales Australia.
