Drove into the city again today. The potholes all along the 101 (yea, THE 101) and the craters all over the drive from the bridge to 19th ave and even around van ness are ALL STILL THERE as they've been for as long as I can remember. Unsurprising? Absolutely. Roads were better in Iraq, and in no way is that an exaggeration, I spent 4 deployments there. At least IED's are supposed to hurt you. the road horrors in California are just irresponsibility, faulty prioritization strategy, and mismanagement of money.

With the amount of wealth CA has and the amount of taxes were paying being at #6 is bad

Mother Nature is currently showing the state's imperfections at the moment which should be a major eye opener for our leaders up in Sacramento.

Exactly...This State is so wealthy and has one of the largest economies in the world and yet our roads/freeways are trashy,bumpy,pot-holed and yet when they do try to resurface or make repairs they use some kind of cheap material that seems to wear off not too long after

The old adage, where does the money go, will point out the reason for the problems.

There appears to be no excuse in CA for such battered roads. As CA does not have so much rain, snow, freeze cycles compared what roads in other parts of the country have to endure each year. The only place that I been to that has worse roads than California is the roads in Washington State particularly near Seattle. Which is Ironic as the "environmentalists" don't allow the use of road salt fearing that it would flow into Puget Sound. Though isn't Puget Sound already a salty body of water?

Regarding how our streets are trashy I witnessed two strong compelling reasons for it.
One is how recycling trucks now encourage people to through recyclables into one large can without being secured by a bag. Recyclables often end up flying out of the top of recycling trucks when it heads down the streets and freeways particularly on a windy day.

Another reason is those "single use bag ordinances" placed by those progressive and usually strong Democrat leaders in the name of "reducing litter" however Google street view and waste audits such as the one done by San Francisco's department of works has shown that juristications that passes such Single use bag acts in the name of "trash reduction" ended up having more trash plastic and otherwise everywhere on the streets and elsewhere since its implementation than the years before. I also notice OC and SD county freeways/streets getting much more plastic and other trash on the side of the road since the ordinance went statewide. OC and SD county freeways were actually much cleaner of litter before this November even though the population is just as dense and diverse. I read an article that just recently Norway, under the direction of the Norwegien Environmental Agency rejects the EU's directive to ban or regulate or tax such bags in their country as they actually did their study on this issue and understands how important bags are to contain all the other rubbish we produce from entering the environment. Something that many of these "fad environmentalists" around the world completely overlooks. Remember Norway is among the most serious countries in the world on environmental issues and sustainability for decades.

California's roads are in dire shape, says former Caltrans director
LOL, "Former Caltrans director". Let me guess, he and his colleagues got paid six figures but somehow couldn't find any funds to rebuild the roads.
