Much less expensive than Berkeley and probably less expensive than Davis, too.
Chico and the northern central valley towns have gangs and drugs. Chico can work considering your liberal interests, but choose your subdivision carefully, such as the California Park area, golf course area.

To some extent, yes, but also no, since Irvine, California is master planned and liberal, great schools, plenty of liberal things to do, mountain biking trails, etc. Ditto for Aliso Viejo, near Irvine, voted blue last time. Lots of condos in Aliso with IT workers just like Boulder.

Chico's a nice town, but Boulder is far more sophisticated than Chico.

I'm not sure what you're looking for, OP, but I'll just suggest Placerville, in the foothills of the Sierras, east of Sacramento. It's a small town, but similar to some of the CO mountain towns, has historic GoldRush-era architecture, with hiking, river rafting, etc. nearby. And as someone else mentioned, Truckee, up near Lake Tahoe, might do it for you, too.

Yes. Just like that other OP. Except people told the other OP it wasn't doable, and steered her to the NW, and she/they was/were open to that.

South lake Tahoe, Incline Village and Truckee might fit the bill.

Nice area, except Placerville is very conservative. NORTH Lake Tahoe and Truckee, nearby, are liberal...

What would you say is more liberal between north lake and south shore? They requested liberal. I find the south shore conservative. But others may have different opinions.
