Palo Alto Commuting
My husband and I are considering a move the Palo Alto area for a job. What is the commute from Livermore like, how long, how busy? Also what are the nice yet affordable areas to buy a home with in 1 hour commute to Palo Alto. We have 3 young children and want to make sure we are in a good school district and safe friendly neighbor hood. Thanks!!!

Bad news , the commute from Livermore to Palo Alto is horrible. I-580 and I-880 move at a crawl just about every day, but once you get on one of the bridges ($4 toll one-way), it usually moves a little faster. I would guess about 3 hours round trip on an average day - longer if there is a wreck. The problem is lots of people who work in the immediate bay area live out in Livermore, Tracy, Manteca, etc. because homes are cheaper out there and lots of people commute 30 - 40 miles one way to work (and gas is about $3.69 now).
I can't think of anyplace that would be affordable. You could check out Fremont, Morgan Hill, Gilroy. Everything close to Palo Alto will be expensive.

California is in a major budget crisis and even good school districts are getting cut. Declining real estate prices with no end in sight. Jobs are getting cut. There really isn't much good news, and overall the Bay Area doesn't make much sense for someone who needs to own property. There aren't any hidden gems - they've all gotten just as expensive as everywhere else in the Bay Area because of speculation.

You can consider:
Saratoga, Cupertino (excellent schools, 30 - 45 min commute)
Evergreen (of San Jose) (Excellent schools, 45 - 1 hour commute, more affordable).

Thank you for the responses!! 1.5 hours one way from Livermore to Palo Alto? OUCH!! I figured an hour was about right.
Is it quicker if you take 84 (Vallecitos Rd.), from Livermore, to I-680 to I-880 and then around the bay avoiding the bridge tolls?
Also, do most people living in Livermore carry earthquake insurance for their property?
