So home schooling families should scram out of California. Small business owners who fuss about regulations should scram. Hard working people who complain about the 10.3% CA tax rate should scram. Actually everyone should scram who does not buy into the politics of the CA Democrat party and its various interst groups (environmentalists, gays, multi-culturalists, anti business zealots, athiests, etc, etc).

Should be a great place once they're all gone.

It should, actually ... (wink).

First of all ... I have friends who home school their kids. But they actually pay credentialed teachers to do it. So I'm not against home schooling at all ... I'm against home schooling that doesn't meet the most basic, fundamental standards.

If you guys have your way ... anybody off the street can teach ... they don't even need to have attended high school. There's no requirement to prove that they can even read or write. This is way beyond ridiculous.

If you guys don't understand the problem here then ... you really do need to leave. Seriously ...

Besides, I don't know why a conservative would want to live here. All you guys do is complain about the state anyway. Except maybe you like to complain a lot ...

if you are talking about charter school, the parents actually do the teaching, the district likes it because they get the money for that student. Once a month they turn in work samples-and undergo yearly testing. There is no credentialed "teaching" in that situation, the supervising teacher is not actually teaching anything. The teacher is the parent. Homeschooling done under the supervision of a charter school is also in danger with this ruling as is every private school in California. The education code does not require a teaching certificate for teachers in private schools.

The only reason for the teacher credential requiremnet is for the Democrats to pay back the California Teachers Asscoiation. The teachers union is the largest camapign contributor to the Democrat party in California. The Democrats, who run the state with little interference, pay back the teachers union by making sure that charter schools (who are not required to use credentialed teachers) and home schooling does not flourish. The schools receive $7000+ for each kid they keep in public school. So they will force parents to send their kids to public schools with their credentialed teachers regarless of how bad the education

This is yet another ridiculous argument. You might as well argue that someone who drops out of the final year of their medical residency should be allowed to perform surgery ...

Afterall ... they completed the 11 out of the 12 years ... didn't they? C'mon ....

It doesn't work that way ... nor should it. If you really care about your kids' education then you should be arguing for raising the standards ... NOT lowering them.

Just because you're their parent DOESN'T mean you're qualified.

if you are an activist against the poor quality education in our public schools (which has more to do with money than anything else) perhaps removing yourself from the school system slows down the process of repair. If there are 100,000 parents who are currently home-schooling due to non-religious disputes with the public schools then getting those parents active in the school system might have a significant and tangible benefit

Keep in mind that mandatory schooling is not for parents, it is for the kids and the future society. The socialization that is learned in school is key to getting along with other members of society, especially those with whom you will disagree, in your future. Most people like myself who went to school and disagreed with a ton of the b/s that they pass off as education were aware of this, were supported by our parents in our thinking and were able to educate ourselves outside of school as well as inside of it.

I have known a number of home-schooled people in my life and as anecdotal as it is there is merit in the observation that a number of them would have preferred to be in school were it not for their parents.

Obviously this is part of a larger discussion/dispute over whether children are the "property" of their parents or of society. It is my feeling that people need to be given as much opportunity as possible about the world outside as children so as to best pursue their own lives when they become adults. As the most consistent predictor in American society of future success is the success of one's father one must also consider that the poor parents of the world are also greatly detracting from their children's futures.

For all those who decry bad parenting why are you so disinclined to help "children" escape from its effects?

in terms of the legal aspects the state has every right to make school mandatory and it's a quality of life matter, one that nearly every country in the world agrees with. If you take issue, as I do, with the actual content of schooling, textbooks, etc, the schools ARE a public institution subject to citizen oversight. Instead of spending 6 hours a day teaching your kids things they can learn in school why not run for school board?

This is exactly what happens when we allow other rights to be banned and say nothing, it allows these yahoo's to continue with the next ban or law or whatever.

Yet another ludicrous argument ... this goes way beyond politics.

So ... you're actually arguing that it's better to have NO requirements ... not even proof of the ability to read or write ... to homeschool kids.

You guys are literally in the dark ages ...

Look Sheri257, I am not going to be sucked into a philosophical debate with you about the role of government. We have had that debate before and I know that you support paternalistic Big Government with a religious fervor.

I do appreciate your display of liberal openmindedness in inviting conservatives to leave. Too bad so many of us take our companies with their jobs and tax money with us, huh? I am leaving next year. I just hope that California doesn't make it illegal for me to leave before then!

Can anyone show me where in the Constitution anything is said about having a Department of Education? This country was founded on Home Schooling and some of the Greatest Minds were home schooled.

I attended Catholic Schools for a time and only one of the nuns had a CA credential.

Until not to long ago, teachers were credentialed for LIFE...

It would be nice if we could get politics out of the classroom... guess that's never going to happen now.

I'm pro choice and that extends to the classroom.
