I wish I understood all the endorsements for San Diego. It's a heavily populated city but a gated community culture.

Indeed. As such, SD is one of the very least friendly major cities in the United States.

My experience has been the opposite. And I'd never want to live in LA. OP, I guess this just means take everyone's opinions (including mine) with a grain of salt.

I think the #1 difference is that SD generally has a more laid-back pace of life than LA, which some people prefer.

I currently live in SD and I don't really know what that means. Especially if I'm stupid enough to be on the freeways between 3:30 and 7pm.

Agreed, my wife is from SD and has family there we visit regularly. We've also both lived in the South Bay including Redondo Beach. The 'notion' that SD is way more laid back is really a fallacy from many years gone by. While it used to be laid back, it has been a long time since it was over populated and the roads do not support the crowds. Passive aggressive is more of the norm along with denial of all things 'anti- San Diego.

At least in LA ppl are more real. Most will tell you honestly what they like/dislike about the city and county. In addition, the South Bay is one of the nicest parts of the county.

Both have their pros/cons depending on where you wind up living and working. Traffic in both locations suck during rush hour. If I had to live SD county it would be North County. If I had to live in LA it would be the South Bay (South Redondo, Torrance). Both have plenty of 20 somethings and good surfing spots. Don't expect uncrowded beaches or surf spots in either location. And don't expect local surfers to be happy you've joined them in the water. That's not to say you won't make friends to hang with in either location.

Derek

The only part of the South Bay that is truly "awesome" is the Palos Verdes peninsula, IMO. Otherwise, the coastal communities in Orange County blow places like El Segundo and Torrance completely out of the water -- cleaner, newer, more attractive-looking streets and neighborhoods, more American in feeling, less congested and, in some spots, friendlier. Oh, yeah -- much nicer beaches with cleaner water, too.
