They've become more integrated into the mainstream White American population, no different than Italians, Basques and Spanish descendants, really.

Usually the give-away that someone is Portuguese descent is the use of the "s" in place of the "z" in many surnames. For whatever reason, the people on the west side of the Iberian Penninsula were more fond of "s" while the Castillians on the other side were more fond of "z".

Someone will be Mr. Joshua Rodrigues, or Mrs. Maria Gomes.

Best friend in high school in Mariposa was Portuguese. Next door neighbors when I was five in Los Banos were Portuguese. Thinking back over the years I can't count all the Portuguese people I know (and I've liked every one).
