Well, I lived there for three years due to my employment at the time and didn't like it. Granted, that was almost 30 years ago but the topography hasn't changed. Guess I was and gratefully remain an outsider.

My first inclination was to vote and say Santa Cruz. This family seems like they'd be a good fit for Santa Cruz, plus they'd be in easy proximity to the Bay Area for employment. However, the cost of living in Santa Cruz is rapidly catching up with that of the Bay Area: ridiculous.

So, I voted for San Luis Obispo instead. It is kind of where NorCal meets SoCal, in a sense, and an area in which elements reminiscent of both Santa Cruz and Santa Barbara can be found. Plus, SLO County, with the presence of SLO itself, Cal Poly SLO, and the various beach communities, has a good amount of "crunch" already, though maybe not to the extent of Santa Cruz County, so a niche can still be found by this family.

I don't have an aversion to Bakersfield like many on this forum do, but let's just say that this family would probably be (relatively) pioneering in Bakersfield, doing what they do. Plus, honestly, it isn't the nicest or cleanest city in the world, although southwest Bakersfield and other peripheral cul-de-sac developments are lovely in that squeaky-clean, sterile suburban style.

Yeah, well keep in mind many of those people have limited options in life. People are very good at making the best of bad situations when they have to. But the combo of terrible air, suburban sprawl, trash blowing around, gang issues, incredible summer heat, cow smells, oil derricks, redneck politics, etc make it the least desirable option by a mile, especially for a family of crunchies.

No one calls it CenCal. There is either the central coast or the central valley.
