Hello, my friend recently got a job at Pleasant Valley State Prison near Coalinga, CA and I wanted some advise as I'm going to travel with my friend to help look for a decent housing.

I think most live in Coalinga and Avenal.

How is Lemoore or Stratford? Are they good places to live? Would they be too far?

It's pretty desolate out there, and these towns barely qualify as towns (if I'm not mistaken). I've often thought of becoming a prison librarian, but the isolation and HEAT in most of the "prison towns" is what usually stops me. Great job if you don't mind that, though.
And yeah, they look a tad far - at least Lemoore is, at around 40mi from Coalinga. If he's willing to drive that far, may as well live in Fresno, Tulare, or Visalia! Those places at least have something going on, lol.

Stratford along SR-41 is fairly small and remote. Lemoore or even Hanford may be better options. Those are larger towns with more in the way of shopping and other amenities. When I lived in Visalia, I had a friend who commuted to Avenal State Prison from Visalia. So, it's fairly common for correctional employees to commute from more populated areas of the Valley to the state prisons located in more remote areas.

Maybe rent in Coalinga to start and take more time to look around. As others have stated, other cities are pretty far away so may want to start with an easy commute and move later if he wants to.
