This is great news for those planning on visiting the area. Big Sur has been cutoff for a very long time after fire, flood and mud slide damage. This new bridge will connect the town of Big Sur with a long scenic stretch of Hwy 1 to the south. Though the full route will not accessible for a long time. Still, this will open up many beautiful areas which were not accessible from the north.

Big Sur’s Pfeiffer Canyon Bridge to reopen Oct. 13

That is great news! The residents who've been stranded behind the bridge must be thrilled. I'm amazed that Cal Trans got this open as quickly as they have -- initially they were saying it might take as long as a year. So, kudos to Cal Trans!

Yes, its also been closed during the construction of the bridge. Its actually one of my favorite beaches down there and is incredibly beautiful.

GAWD, those are unbelievable photos! So, do you time some of your photos, to catch the sunlight in exactly the right spot, and all? I mean, wait for exactly the right time of day?

Do you give photography lessons?

Hi Ruth,

I pretty much live by the old photographic rule of F8 and be there. Perhaps the biggest part of it is being at the right place at the right time. Normally that starts with visualization. I generally get inspired by locations and photos from other photographers. Then I let my mind wander a bit and think about possibilities.

Usually if you see a really awesome shot especially of a landscape scene there has been some degree of planning involved. Sometimes a lot of planning. For example, when I do my night shooting I have to plan for the right location, the foreground and background elements, the phase of the moon, the weather, the wind, the time of the year, the Milky Way location in relation to the subject, etc...

The right time of day (or night) varies wildly depending on what it is you want to capture. In the shot above with the sunbeam shooting through the cave at Pfeiffer, that only happens a couple of months out of the year. Then it has to be when the sun is at the right angle just before sunset. In addition, it can't be a cloudy day or beam will be blocked. And the tide effects how many rocks are visible, etc... All of that and more play into the planning and timing of the shots along with a sturdy tripod.

Derek
