Don't take Capt. Dan's comment combining Fresno with the other 2 too seriously. He remembers the "old days" when he lived in California. But you still have other good info, Dan.
Fresno had a crime problem in the 90s but now has a lower murder rate than San Francisco, Sacramento, and many Southern California cities.
Now in terms of this thread, I would say my top 3 inland cities are:
Clovis
Visalia
Fresno
For west of the Coast Range cities
San Luis Obispo
Santa Rosa
Ventura

The commute is bad. Live in either Long Beach's Belmont Shore area or Seal Beach. If you can afford it, anywhere on the Palos Verdes peninsula, but it's like the Beverly Hills of the beach cities.

I'd go with:
1. Sutter Creek
2. Ferndale
3. Bishop
Honorable Mention: Happy Camp. No way I could ever live in such a remote place, but it's great to visit there along the Klamath River.

0-49,999 population "rural" (Monterey and Paso Robles)

500,000-999,999 "urban" (Fresno and San Francisco)
