OK, I'll put in my 2c worth... Three categories, since CA is so vast and diverse:

Villages: Idyllwild (loved living there for 12 years); Big Sur (just... wow), and Los Olivos (I realize it can be pretentious, but the wine and the Wine Merchant & Cafe does it). Honorable Mention - Cayucos (classic tiny beach village).

Towns/smaller cities: Bishop (the whole Eastern Sierra from Lone Pine north); Ojai (lots of reasons); Pismo Beach (classic and yet unspoiled beach town). HM - Encinitas.

Cities/bigger places: San Diego (Little Italy, East Village and ballpark areas, Balboa Park); Ventura (I have relatives there and it has a great and as yet un-gentrified downtown, though it really hasn't done a good job embracing the beach); and Fullerton, where I've been the past 5 years (I love our great neighborhoods, friendly vibe and the sense that this city is making itself better, although there's plenty here I'm not so thrilled about... but I can find that anywhere). HM - Santa Monica (overpriced, hectic and ditzy, but... Just such a cool city).

I don't know Northern CA so well, but I love Calistoga, the north shore Tahoe area and Healdsburg.

So there ya go...

What a fun thread, but choosing 3 isn't easy.

Here are mine:

1-Paradise: it is a great size for people who like to know their neighbor and want small town feeling

2-San Francisco: to visit, not to live. There is so much to see and do. we love the people watching and of course lots of diversity and lots of good food.

3-Los Angeles: why? home of the Los Angeles Dodgers and USC Trojans.

others; Sonora, Sacramento, Placerville, So Lake Tahoe and Del Mar area.

And above all others, Weed, Weedpatch and the ever popular, booming metropolis of Oildale!

Used to favor Murphys but as happens too often, it got "discovered" and that ruined it.

San Luis Obispo, Laguna Beach, San Clemente

If you could make it a top 5 I'd add Carmel and Capitola

Most repulsive: Oceanside, Arcata, Bakersfield

San Joaquin Valley, Death Valley areas are pretty much repulsive. I'm not a fan of desert like areas, which makes me vomit going inland. However, far north california at least has some aesthetically pleasing areas inland. Towns are dead end though.

Arvin (potatoes and carrots), Weedpatch (great name), and Weed (another great name).

Oops, just saw that nullgeo and Curmudgeon beat Harrier to them.
