Sounds like a challenge and culture shock combined.

Well, it depends on your needs. I think loners or people who already have a partner might be happy enough there.

Also, if someone was able to travel, it could work fine.

I often thought that if someone had a winter home in Redding and a summer home in Crescent City, it could work out well. Redding is horribly hot from May to November. But winter there is really nice. Sunny, maybe the occasional snowfall, but otherwise really pleasant to be outside. And, there is a lot of great entertainment that comes through Redding.

For instance, after moving to Crescent City, I made a special trip to Redding to see Jay Leno do a show there.

And Redding has good healthcare.

Most people, though, from my experience, who are looking to move to either or - can't afford both. And that's a shame.

If you don't need to stay in California, Brookings, OR is a little bit better than Crescent City as far as amenities. But, healthcare still sucks there. Weather is a tad warmer, but not by a lot. But, it has a LOT more charm.

My father-in-law and his wife retired in Santa Rosa on a very limited retirement income. Their small two bedroom home was relatively cheap, especially for Santa Barbara county with the great coastal weather along the Central Coast. In addition, its close to San Luis Obispo and other more expensive areas. You just have to be willing to live in a mostly Hispanic community. They are ok with that even though not Hispanic themselves.

The same is true with Salinas. Though its a bit more expensive due to close proximity to Monterey and the Bay Area.

Drive around Lompoc and you will see that it's an economically depressed area.
