Leaving Isla Vista: San Francisco or San Diego?
Originally from Indio,CA which is east of palm springs. Came to UC Santa Barbara in 2001 and graduated with an art& architecture degree in 2005 and have been working ever since in this town for the last 3 years. I just got married and am looking to leave this town (eg. goleta, Santa Barbara) forever to make a fresh start. Some people I have spoken to have said that I should pack up my bags and head to SF and get a place in the east bay. However others claim that coming back down south might be a good move. For me, I have been working in hospitality field and want to do a career in the art field....anything! Mostly the job market in Santa Barbara county sucks, well depends on what you want to do. But for recent college grads Santa Barbara is the pits. Every person that graduated UCSB in 2005 from my department all moved out of the area. Probably for good reason: the rent is high here, the gas is curently 4.18 a gallon, everything is pricey here. I have never flown out of Santa barbara airport because it will cost you an arm and a leg.
I still live in the world famous Isla Vista college scene and I personally believe that the next place I go would be "easy" compared to living in this university ghetto. Bottom line: im just looking to get a real career going and save money to design and build my own home. A place that has a great art scene, music, theatres, cheap flights, good food, able to ride bike, etc. Thanks.

The two are almost completely different. San Francisco is urban while SD is mostly urban-suburban areas because it's not really suburbs, but it's private homes. SD has much better weather in my opinion and they have beaches. That's the one thing I hate about NorCal-cold beaches or no beach at all.
In general, I would say SD is cheaper. The main thing depends on your budget, but I do believe SF has a bigger art scene. Anywhere in the country is fine for architecture though, just not art in the sense of paintings and the sort.

Where do you think you will do this? Are there jobs nearby for you?
Do you have any architecture experience?
Building experience?
Are you familiar with building codes?
Are you familiar with property zoning?
Do you know the process for getting the permits for routing electrical, gas, and or water to serviceable locations?
Have you any experience with septic systems?

I think you should start applying for jobs in both cities and see which you get the most call backs from. Whichever city that may be probably has more opportunities for you, so I would move to that one.

I left Santa Barbara also and have no desire what so ever to return there. I think SD would be a better choice SF is also very expensive like SB is. SD is not as bad and has better weather.

Why don't people like Santa Barbara? I think it was just a quiet, bedroom community with a good university. I actually want to go to UCSB, but I have heard lots of negative comments about it on this website and don't understand why. No one really explains why they don't like it.

Santa Barbara is way way to expensive and has alot of homeless people, the weather isnt that great to me.I like summer to be warm and sunny not cloudy and 60 day after day.
I want to own my home not be a renter for life you cant own a home there unless you are very wealthy. The jobs are not good paying jobs for what it costs to live there.
It does have a good University but most that attend there do not live there after they Graduate.UCSB is a great place .Santa Barbara is a nice tourist town and caters to them and it should thats how it makes it money. To me there are better places to live if you want to own your own home. If your ok renting your entire life then Santa Barbara would be a great place to live. Not everybody wants to own a home some would rather rent then own.
Just my 2 cents though. This is my Home

I want to know this too because it is very expensive to live in almost any sizeable city along the coast. I think thats the reason ppl are saying SB sucks. I don't care about owning a home, I like renting because I move around alot.
