I agree, Your reasoning makes sense and it's clear to me that your heart really isn't in taking the new job or moving.

Stay put, and use your reasonable rent as a spring board to save as much as you can for things like a future house down payment, your retirement, and your child's future education.

A lot of people believe that you should jump at every job opportunity, but sometimes it's better to wait for the *right* opportunity. Sometimes the devil you know is better than the one you don't.

Good luck!

They just offered more than I thought they would. Now I'm undecided again. Haha damn.

Ironically it looks like another possibility might be commuting from Santa Clarita. Might be a stretch but I see quite a few 2 bedroom apts under 2 grand a month. Maybe I would be open to renting a house around that amount in Palmdale too but we'll see what happens.

Santa Clarita to Palmdale is a very easy commute since you are driving north in the morning and south in the afternoon. Santa Clarita is also incredibly expensive though. It’s going to be closer to SD prices than Palmdale prices.

How does your wife feel about the move and potential new job? Is she planning on staying home after the baby is born, or will she be looking for a new job if you move?

She likes where we are but is fine with the move if it makes sense in the long run. She also wants to stay at home for a while after our kid is born.

Santa Clarita to Palmdale is a doable but busy commute. It will start off fine, but wear on you over time.

I'd stick with living in Palmdale. Take the money you will be saving from not living in Santa Clarita and buy yourself a nice little shangri-la in west Palmdale/Lancaster/Quartz Hill. You won't regret it. Plus, you can easily head to Santa Clarita/LA on the weekends for a little break.

It sounds like you have a good wife. Is she already pregnant, or are you just planning to start a family soon? If she's already pregnant, having to switch doctors and hospitals close to term might be a factor to consider in making the move now vs. later. Her OB might be able to make a referral though.

To me, it seems like the decision really boils down to how you feel about the prospective job and employer versus your current job and employer. In your first post you said that there isn't much room for advancement at your current job -- how important is that to you? Do you think you'll enjoy and/or be challenged more in one of the jobs over the other? Also, now that the prospective employer has offered more, you might factor in how long it would take you to get to that same salary at your current job.

I'm going to sound like a broken record, but there's no right or wrong choice here. In fact, there is no such thing as an absolute "right" choice. All choices have pros and cons and uncertainty involved. Weigh all the logical stuff, check your fears about the uncertainty, and you'll make a good decision, regardless of what it turns out to be. Best wishes.

^She is great and yeah she's pregnant already but still very early. Thanks to everyone in this thread for the great info and advice. I'll be headed up that way soon. At least there'll be another vacancy for someone down here in SD.

Some advice: Don't move to Santa Clarita....it's not worth the price increase compared to Palmdale! Seriously!

The ONLY reason one should consider Santa Clarita is to be somewhat closer to a job in the San Fernando Valley, but that's not a concern for you since your job is in Palmdale itself, so why bother?

The schools and neighborhoods in West Palmdale/Rancho Vista and Quartz Hill are just as good as they are in Santa Clarita for a fraction of the price.

Santa Clarita, to me, is alright, but it has that annoying "Keep Up With Jones' " vibe that I personally don't find appealing.

I would hate to see a young couple who are just starting out get caught up in the misery of that lifestyle when they don't need to be.

The nice thing about Palmdale/Lancaster is that if you want to play "Keep up with the Jones" you can....but there's not this insane overall pressure to do so like there is in Santa Clarita.

Another thing you should keep in mind is that if the Far-Left morons in Sacramento get their way, you'll be charged per mile for vehicle taxes too. That could get ugly real quick.

Just stick with West Palmdale/Quartz Hill or West Lancaster.
