I was recently told by a friend of mines that California will no longer accept our current ID cards for flights? I can't remember the specific too much but he had mentioned something about my license no longer being good to travel in a year or two?

Anyone have any more information on that?

You can keep using your current ID until Oct 2020.

You should be able to use your current ID till 2020. Idk why they're doing it, but I hope it helps weeds out any poeple living under fake identites.

There appears a discrepancy between the CA DMV website posted above and the website from Homeland Security. Not sure which one is not updated.

California has an extension for REAL ID enforcement, allowing Federal agencies to accept driver's licenses and identification cards from California at Federal facilities, nuclear power plants and federally regulated commercial aircraft until October 10, 2018.

They do this because States like California issues drivers' license to undocumented aliens without identifying them as Foreign Nationals. This makes the drivers' license no longer trustworthy of verifying identity.

Can't wait to hear the CA politicians scream about this.

You have a source for this reasoning? I'm curious because dl's issued to undocumented persons are not identical to those issued to documented ... therefore appropriate identification is obvious to security.

The Real ID Act was passed by Congress in 2005, quite a few years before California started issuing driver's licences to undocumented aliens in 2015.

Illegal aliens will not be able to get Real ID licenses in any state, including California; they'll need to show other identification for air travel and to access Federal property. This question is clearly answered on the U.S. Dept. of Homeland Security's Real ID info site.

And, yes, California's driver's licenses for illegal aliens do look different than regular licenses.

I doubt you'll hear any screaming from Californian politicians about Real ID because California is already issuing driver's licenses that are compliant with Real ID.

Sorry to disappoint all of the California-bashers out there.

(P.S. If you have a regular California driver's license, you have until October 1, 2020 to get the Real ID drivers license. You can continue to use your current California-issued driver's license for air travel until then. If you live in another state, consult with your state's DMV office.)
