And whatever the reason: the facts are: the growers can't get field workers lately in sufficient numbers and it's hitting their business hard.

Then raise the pay.

It is like saying no one wants to make shoes for $6 per day so we need some child labor.

They could try ... but bet here is they still won't get those workers from citizens. Not with unemployment so low and so many other preferable job openings.

Ice is only deporting criminals , not farm workers.

Ok. Can you offer a solution that does not ignore our laws and integrity as a country?

This is no longer exactly true. ICE is auditing a lot of California growers lately ... which may not be actually deportation ... but it is forcing the workers out.

Yes. Change the laws. It's called immigration reform.

Change the laws to what? There is already a pathway to citizenship. We already allow 1 million people immigrants into this country every year, that is very generous. What we really need to do is remove illegal aliens and let the market correct itself. Both those things won't happen over night. (I also know removing all illegals is impossible or happen fast enough, let's kill that argument right there)

I know that immigration reform is code word for amnesty. I like that immigration is limited and isn't just handed out like nothing, that would really cheapen what being an American is. We also don't need a large influx of poor, uneducated, unskilled people. Actually no country in the world wants that, that's why they have borders and and immigration laws.

Heh. Obviously, the “pathways to citizenship” aren't working in the cases cited for agricultural field work, are they? If they were, there wouldn't be a severe shortage now would there?

I also don't agree that “immigration reform” is code for “amnesty”. Depends on how the reform is to be structured.

And lastly, I'm an advocate for “qualification quotas” and very limited immigration of any kind. So you can take your immigration ire out on other posters who you assume are for open-ish borders.

Mom was a farm girl born and raised before she went off to the big city to become a Registered Nurse.

As a Nurse in Santa Clara with other Nurses for roommates, they would earn extra money picking... mostly plums but also other produce...

There was one grower not far from O Conner Hospital that had lots of young Nurses working... Mom said he was very fair and always sent each nurse home with a small box of produce...

I venture to say there are not many Registered Nurses picking these days and especially not in Santa Clara... times do change.

San Jose was famous for it's Prunes... hence the Prune Yard shopping center.

Are you saying we need to offer citizenship to fill labor shortages for fruit pickers?
