Injecting a bit of reality here.

In order to legally split the state--regardless of how many votes the initiative gets--it would need to be approved by 1) the California State Legislature, then 2) Congress.

Do you honestly think that current state legislators, with all their power and prestige are going to vote themselves out of office to be given the opportunity to start all over again running for office in their "new" state? A lot of them get national support/donations due to the size of California--would they still get those? At the end of the day, I really doubt the California Legislature would agree to this.

If by chance it actually got to Congress--what would be the actual pros/cons of this? Nancy Pelosi would no longer be the big shot from the big state. All the representatives from what would become the new states would be out and would have to be re-elected to represent the new states.

Bottom line--California as it stands, with all its issues--has power. Three small states would not have that power. And the politicians, both here and in DC would know that. What politician would vote to take away his power?

I will most likely vote no on the initiative on the basis of it being a waste of time. Did the rich guy backing this even think this through? Did he really think an initiative was all it took?

You may be from Georgia but I'm guessing you don't spend much time in Atlanta.

They're not. I lived in Monterey County for 11 years in the late 90s and 2000s and people there are much more connected to the South Bay Area. Many work in San Jose.

Ah yes. The Independent State of Southern California. Doesn’t that have a nice ring to it? Maybe not.

Only if in Spanish.

California is a very diversified state and it will remain that way. No splits....talk about asking for more headaches.

The REAL difficult part is how water rights would be handled, dumping rights, how shipping would be handled, pension payments, and dropping or adopting new laws. For instance the State of Jefferson and new "SoCal" would be anti-sanctuary city, and more than likely anti-union. Those would be the biggest challenges but still not insurmountable.
I would actually imagine that water rights would be a little bit easier to solve, since different districts purchase water from different sources, and as it is, water to and from different water districts criss-crosses different parts of the state. San Diego gets some of its water from Lake Oroville in the far north, San Francisco and the peninsula get theirs from hundreds of miles away in hetch hetchy, local reservoirs add partial capacity that stays local, it's already so complicated that I can't imagine it getting any worse! :-)

They feel it will reduce headaches in the sections that will no longer be controlled by one Party.

The Democrats are against it, of course. Maybe this will show the Sacramento politicians they can’t just do whatever they want without consequences.

I would be all for this as we are moving to San Diego.

Just want it to be totally independent of California. Make a complete break and form a new state with no influence from Sacramento or it's politicians.
